Hoffman, Padres could extend relationship

As AL fans rejoice!

Trevor Hoffman is hesitant to make concrete decisions about his future before October, but he’s almost certain that the 2008 season won’t be his last.

The Padres closer, a pending free agent who will turn 41 next month, also should have a pretty good idea whether he’ll be part of the Padres’ future by the end of September.

General manager Kevin Towers said Wednesday that he’ll have preliminary discussions with Hoffman before the end of the season.

“I think I’ve got two or three more years left in me,” Hoffman said. “We have a lot of talent here. I’d like to see their growth take hold. I’d like to be a part of that. ... The talent we have, with some pieces added, I’m thinking we could be back at the top of the division quickly.”

I was going to use a condom, but then I thought, "Hey, when am I going to be in Haiti again?"

So when's Gambling Rent going to get here and declare that--any day now!--the Padres are going to start their run towards the pennant and that Hoffman is better than Rivera? Because if you're to be 100% wrong, you might as well do it with consistancy

I'd take you back Trev, but it *had* to be long relief. I used to know you'd shut the door but now it's just waiting for you to give up the tying hit

"His role is closer if he's going to be here," Towers said.

This might tie the Padres' hands with regard to Hoffman's return.

Hoffman's really only had two bad stretches this year - the beginning of the season, and late June/early July. Other than that, he's been mostly the same pitcher he's always been. His appearances have been spread out more because San Diego hasn't had as many close games as in the past, but on the occasions where he's had to pitch fairly frequently on short rest he's usually done pretty well. I would have to wonder whether Hoffman can still pitch as the primary closer on a good team, though, where he'd be called on more frequently with short rest.

As a very patient Heath Bell owner in an NL Only keeper league, I DO NOT approve of this move.
