Could even the Astros end up with more wins than the NL West winner? Stay tuned…
Even [Brandon Backe’s] standup comedy routine was funny afterward as he jokingly said he tried to keep the ball from going into left field, which is where Ty Wigginton started in place of injured star Carlos Lee.
Wigginton didn’t have much to regret either, driving in all of the Astros’ runs to help Backe win a duel against lefthander Jonathan Sanchez 3-1 at Minute Maid Park.
...
By opening the four-game series with a victory, the Astros extended their winning streak to five games and reached the .500 mark for the first time since they were 33-33 on June 11.
They also have won 12 of their past 15 games.

That, of course, depends on the NL West winner. The Astros won’t have too much influence on that race, because they don’t play the Dodgers, and only have three games vs. Arizona left. As for the quest for .500? A cursory glance makes it seem possible. While they are two games under .500 against the Central so far, they play 13 of the remaining 25 games against Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. They have winning records against both the East and the West, who account for the remaining 19 games. I don’t think there have ever been four teams with winning records in the Central division since its inception in 1994.
but actually it looks like the entire NL except for cubs decided that parity means every team should be lousy with 1 or 2 good players and everyone else filler.
