Houston Chronicle: Qualls suspended, fined for toss into stands

Chad Qualls was given a three-game suspension and fined today for throwing a ball into the stands at Angel Stadium in frustration Monday night. He was set to start serving the suspension tonight, but he has appealed and will be available to pitch.

The incident took place after the seventh inning of Monday’s loss to the Angels.

Qualls was suspended and fined, “for inappropriate actions at the conclusion of the bottom of the seventh inning,” according to the release sent with the announcement from former Astros player and general manager Bob Watson, Major League Baseball’s vice president of on-field operations.

Last September at the Big A, when the Angels were still in it, there was some big game, featuring some tough late-inning situation where there were runners on base and the opponent's lefty mashers coming up. J.C. Romero had been warming up, but someone else (Shields, probably) got the call. Romero responded -- still in the middle of the game -- by firing a baseball over the Disneyland rocks and into the concourse, which is filled with kids.

I never saw a word of it mentioned, though thousands of people (including everyone in the Angels bullpen) must have seen it.

What nonsense. (not that a 3-game suspension for a middle reliever is exactly going to ruin his season)

Would he have gotten suspended if he threw the ball into the stands as a celebration rather than in frustration?

Righetti got suspended right, when he threw the ball over the RF fence after he gave up a grand slam?

That's who I thought of, too, jmac66.
