Hunter could be on Sox within a week :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: White Sox

Another buy low, sell high. Oh, wait a minute.

Ken Williams has learned to accept fans and media often tossing him into what he refers to as “The Idiot of the Day Club.’’

But the trade of Jon Garland to the Angels on Monday afternoon for shortstop Orlando Cabrera was “Phase 2’’ of the offseason facelift only because the club is feeling all but certain that “Phase 1’’ was accomplished over the weekend.

Sources both in the Sox organization and the camp of free-agent outfielder Torii Hunter have told the Sun-Times that the two sides could be signing a contract within the week.

Will that signing be before or after dinner with Tom Hicks?

I think Kenny is missing an important part of the 2005 formula. He's getting his defense tightened up, and while losing Garland may hurt they can probably do OK in the pitching department, and they've always scored runs. Now I think he needs to work on the part where Detroit goes 71-91.

Getting Cabrera and Hunter will make this a 0.500 team. (maybe) What's the point of that?

Not only a .500 team, but a very expensive .500 team that just paid a premium for a lot of service time after various players' 30th birthdays. Dye, Buehrle, and Hunter are probably not looking forward to their best days, and Konerko and Thome are already aging.

they've always scored runs

their offense was horrible last season

Yeah, well it was mostly a setup for the Detroit line. The point is that reclaiming 05 won't work by getting guys that were good back then and crossing your fingers. I'm a Twins fan and we've investigated this in great detail. It's a bad plan.
