Hurd: Have trouble sleeping? Watch playoff baseball

Isn’t the Convention on Psychotropic Substances coming up?

After all, what’s better? Counting sheep ‘til the wee hours? Or watching an 11-inning thriller stretch out so long and move at such a pace that it would make the Slowskys look like Usain Bolt. That contest: a 9-8 Tampa Bay Rays win over the Boston Red Sox in Game 2 of the American League Championship Series ended at 1:49 a.m. (EST). Think about that. All the Tampa-area sports bars had kicked out their patrons by that time.

Time of game: 5 hours, 22 minutes. Average time between pitches: 46 seconds.

Still, not convinced that this is an insomniac’s dream? Well, consider that five days later, baseball served up one of the great comebacks in any professional sport. The Red Sox overcame a seven-run deficit with seven outs to go and staved off elimination to force Saturday’s Game 6.

The final pitch was served up at 12:18 a.m., which also happened to be the exact same time the Red Sox were last eliminated from a league championship series.

So you see, there are things to keep you happily occupied in the middle of the night — in October anyway. For the other 11 months a year, you’re on your own.

Clever addition of another Joe, specifically Joe Taxpayer.

And I used to think it clever that we called distant cousin Joe Meyer "Joe Mama".

Already on the list:

Joe D Plummer
Joe Six-Pack (apparently he's half Greek, half Korean)

Yet another reason I want the Rays to win is that if we're going to have another World Series with every game starting two hours after the sun goes down, there should be at least a few where the players don't have to wear hooded sweatshirts and ski caps to deal with the 40-degree wind chill in the late innings. It really is a different game when the whole "summer" aspect is not even in the back of anyone's mind.

Hell, Game 6 was a 9-inning affair where only 6 runs were scored and it still ran almost 4 hours.

Wee! Another article whining about how late the games are running?

Really? And I thought that San Francisco bars closed early.

They close 3 hours earlier than the bars in Tampa!

edit: wait, is it 3 hours later? it's 3 hours later.

TiVo is the answer. I watch any NFL or MLB game in 2 hours or less without forwarding between plays, faster if I do.

There is nothing more satisfying than watching a hotly contested playoff game over breakfast 8 hours after it happened.
