IBA: A’s need to sign Bonds to help team, draw fans

Another hopin’ letter from Art Spander.

This is a perfect year. The Giants are down. Now’s the time to put your foot on their throat by putting Bonds on the roster.

Those legal problems? The federal government is having more difficulty building a perjury case against Barry than it is in keeping gasoline affordable. If Barry ever comes to trial, and that’s doubtful, it won’t be for at least a year.

Bonds is going to end up someplace this season. Could any place be more perfect than Oakland? Barry knows the territory. The A’s fans know Barry. True, they haven’t liked him, but loyalty in sports is little more than the letters on the front of a uniform. Let Barry pop a couple against the Yankees or Angels, and you’ll be amazed by his popularity.

We’ve heard reports Barry is being blacklisted, that there’s collusion among teams in the majors. Then Bud Selig, the commish, tells us, “Every club is free to do whatever they want with whomever, and I mean that.”

The A’s are a team in need of jolt of energy, at the plate, at the box office. Sign Barry. It isn’t the least you could do, but it’s the best you could do. Thanks for listening. Sincerely, A. Spander.

This article would have made a lot more sense a week and a half ago.

Bonds is a better left fielder than Jack Cust. Just saying.

Hell, Michael J. Fox could be a better leftfielder than Cust.

Or that wheelchair guy.

In fact, Oakland may the the only team where barry would be a defensive and offensive improvement...

Cust has been surprisingly non-harmful in LF, although of course not anywhere near smooth. I'm more disappointed in the defense of Ryan Sweeney and Emil Brown. Mike Sweeney's been pretty good, and can play 1B somewhat. Bonds only makes sense if they'd rather have him than Frank Thomas.

We have another one for our list of nice things kevin has said about Barry Bonds, either directly or by implication. Today's: Barry Bonds is a superior defensive left fielder to Jack Cust.

So that's something.

Most bad outfielders cost their teams 5-10 runs per year. Cust let 5 in on one play (though he did have some help - the pitcher didn't have to keep giving up hits). Sure, he hit pretty well that day, but he is one bad outfielder. The A's get so many groundballs (is Mark Ellis a magnet or what?) that most of the time it's hard to notice if they have good outfielders or not.

Ah, the "earned" vs. "unearned" run fallacy...

I think that if an unearned run following a player's error is your standard for a run that the player cost his team, then "most bad outfielders" would cost their teams way more than 10 runs per year. No, that 5-10 run statistic would be the result of considering unearned runs as partially the responsibility of the pitcher as well as the players involved in the error.

Now now, he only said Michael J. Fox was a better LF than Jack Cust. He never said anything about Barry Bonds being a better LF than Michael J. Fox.

Michael J. Fox falsely denied being a werewolf, once bought a sports almanac of the future to defraud bookies, and even pretended to be a mouse in order to deprive a needy human child of an adoptive home. He's a lying, cheating sack of ####.

If Michael J. Fox hadn't cured Tom Hanks's alcoholism, Gary Sinise would have died in Vietnam.

The Mets.

The Mariners. In left OR right field. (Or first base or player-manager or player-GM, or...)

No.

I would be fine with this. Bonds isn't so bad a left fielder that he wouldn't be useful, and Thomas needs enough rest that Bonds could get a bunch of ABs at DH too. The A's would have a real chance at the division then (well, I'd like to think they have a shot anyway, but...).

That said, it'll never happen. Too much money, too much hassle to the owner from Selig and the media. But it would be good for them, and it might even get some people to actually show up too, which would be a definite plus.

What exactly is there to fear in the media given what the author said about the crowds?
He's one media member for it and he's not gonna rip them. Their beat writer Slusser doesn't write vitriol.
They would get more coverage and that is not a bad thing.
The venomous media members are pretty freaking irrelevant. What do they care what Bruce Jenkins, Ken Rosenthal, Bill Plaschke, and Mike Lupica write? I wish I could bet Bruce Jenkins unlimited money on his moronic predictions.
What do they care what Jim Rome thinks? Or opposing radio broadcasters? Seriously - I don't see the media concern.
When the Giants were on national TV, though ESPN often made stupid stupid comments, that was not unique to Bonds. The point is, the Giants were on national TV!

"I'm more disappointed in the defense of Ryan Sweeney and Emil Brown."

Given how generally lousy Brown has been throughout his career, I'm not sure how this is possible.
