Inventor of Gatorade dies

Yes, it is true. Gatorade will never be associated with Baseball, perhaps because it does not go well with hot dogs, peanuts and/or Cracker Jacks. But as the “Official Sports Drink of Major League Baseball”, it is right that we honor it’s creator, the now late Dr. Robert Cade.

Besides, the story behind it’s creation is still a classic in my book.

His death was announced by the University of Florida, where he and other researchers created Gatorade in 1965 to help the school’s football players replace carbohydrates and electrolytes lost through sweat while playing in swamp-like heat.

A question from former Gator Coach Dwayne Douglas sparked their research, Cade said in a 2005 interview with the Associated Press. He asked, “Doctor, why don’t football players wee-wee after a game.”

“That question changed our lives,” Cade said.

Using their research, and about $43 in supplies, they concocted a brew for players to drink while playing football.

“It sort of tasted like toilet bowl cleaner,” said Dana Shires, one of the researchers who sampled the first batch.

“I guzzled it and I vomited,” Cade said.

The researchers added some sugar and some lemon juice to improve the taste. It was first tested on freshmen because Coach Ray Graves didn’t want to hurt the varsity team. Eventually, however, the use of the sports beverage spread to the Gators, who enjoyed a winning record and were known as a “second-half team” by outlasting opponents.

Anybody remember Gatorade gum?

Yes. I think it was called Gator gum. It was great, tart in the first bite, then it got tough.

Any truth to the idea that Gatorade after a bout of heavy drinking reduces the chance of a hangover?

It will increase your efficiency at absorbing alcohol while you're drinking.

In my experience, Gatorade after a bout of heavy drinking mostly leads to vomiting, but Gatorade the next morning helps get rid of the hangover.

Why can't thirsty dudes drink it? The lightning bolt doesn't really mean no.

By the way, you don't have to be sweaty and holding a basketball to enjoy a Gatorade.

I like how they basically say, "We made the stuff and it tasted awful! I, myself, vomited it was so bad! So we added a little lemon juice and sugar and gave it to the freshman. Who cares about them?!"

As well she should have. Those are your formative years--you shouldn't be talking gibberish.

Seriously--"loo-loo"? That's gotta be a regional thing.

Gatorade makes beer now?

Shortly after Gatorade was developed, SI (IIRC) had an article on Dr. Cade. The article said that Dr. Cade, who considered alcohol to be the best of tranquilizing drugs, combined Gatorade with beer to form a drink he (or someone) named "Hop-n-Gator."

Gatorade the next morning helps get rid of the hangover.

Yup. Hangovers are mostly a combination of dehydration and vitamin B deficiency. Gatorade (or any sports drink, really) takes care of both.

My home brewed beer takes care of the latter all by itself. It is unfiltered, and brewer's yeast is a great source of vitamin B. I never get a hangover from my homebrew.

And, as a not inconsiderable bonus, you don't have to drink any Gatorade.

I don't know if it was the good doctor his own self who did that; the commcercial brand of Hop'N'Gator was from Iron City Brewery in Pittsburg

That just means you aren't drinking enough at one time. And I second those that said Gatorade is good the next morning for getting rid of a hangover but bad right after you stop drinking.

Oh, I have. I can tell because I usually make a lot of wee wee after.
