Isringhausen blows another one

Train of thought going through La Russa’s mind in the middle of the ninth.

“Hmm. One-run lead; who should I go with? Hey! How about the guy with the ERA of 6.60 and 4 blown saves already? That sounds good!”

I have a two-word defense.

He's. Proven.

Try beating that logic with your fancy "numbers".

It does beat the numbers. 16 IP are meaningless. Isringhausen has full-season ERA+ of 149, 198, 125, 177 coming into the season. Anything can happen to anyone in 16 IP. Look at how CC Sabathia started the season, for instance.

Now, Isringhausen might be toast. He has an injury history, he's old, he's obviously struggling. But that's not a question that statistics can answer at this time - it's a question for expert observation, to see what is qualitatively different, and if the problem is observable, whether it's fixable. LaRussa and Duncan apparently think he's ok. I'm not saying I'd trust them, as a fan, but I wouldn't throw a meaningless sample of data at them as if it were proof of something.

Izzy wants to meet with TLR and Duncan

Reading the article, you can't help but feel bad for the guy. I've always been an Izzy fan, since I think he's been unfairly maligned in St. Louis.

This, combined with Edmonds's release just makes me sad about a couple of my all-time favorites.
