Jays skeptical Mitchell has ‘smoking gun’

The Smoking Gun brings you exclusive documents—cool, confidential, quirky—that can’t be found elsewhere in the Mitchell Report.

Gregg Zaun sounds as if he thinks the Mitchell Report on the use of performance enhancing substances in baseball will not be worth the paper it’s written on.

...“If you want to investigate what is going on in the game of baseball right now, fine, but what happened years ago, who cares?” said Zaun. “I don’t think this is anything more than an attempt for certain people in the game of baseball to leave their mark on the game somehow.

“Is this Bud Selig’s legacy? I don’t know. I’m pretty sure he probably wanted his legacy in the game to be something more than a tie game at the All-Star Game in Milwaukee.

“Right now, as it stands, it will be a tie game at the All-Star Game and the Mitchell Report. That will be his legacy on the game of baseball.”

...“Unless there’s smoking guns, unless there’s failed drug tests, it just goes down to he-said-she-said accusations, innuendos,” Zaun said. “I don’t know what the report says, but if there’s not hard evidence like a failed drug test or somebody got caught purchasing drugs or anything like that, it seems like they’re opening themselves up to a whole lot of negative press for really no reason at all. It baffles me. It really does.”

Is it surprising that players don't think investigators have enough evidence to convict or if they do it's not important because it happened in the past. Of course most events took place in the past.

Of course most events took place in the past.

That's only if you assume that the universe is more than halfway toward collapse.

Lee Harvey Oswald.

I think any player who questions the value of the Mitchell report, or diminishes its importance since it was "in the past" is an almost automatic suspect as a past user of PEDs. There's no reason for Zaun or any other player to get defensive about this.....unless they perhaps were involved.

Greg Zaun just got added to the report.

Glad to see they've already gotten to you.

So, disagreeing with someone calling you a Communist automatically makes you a Communist. Is that how this works?

Or, perhaps, Zaun just doesn't see the value in digging up all sorts of things which happened before the testing policy was implemented.

The Jays should be defensive, after all Troy Glaus is on the list twice.

Zaun is just saying the same thing a lot of people, inckluding me, have said. What is the purpose of naming possible past users? To punish? Embarrass? Get them to talk? Use it as a hammer in the CBA? Cover Selig's ass? Generate a long off-season news cycle? When Selig "explained" it, he was more or less incoherent.

Not to mention a canceled World Series in '94 and an attempt to delete two franchises from existence in 2001.

Not looking so good now, are we?
   16. danup Posted: December 13, 2007 at 07:16 PM (#2644319)
I'd say he's still looking pretty good, since Roxpert had all the evidence and acuity of a hollywood blacklister in this case. Whether you turn out right or not, some methods are rarely justified, and accusing people who disagree with the report of blanket-inclusion in the report is just sloppy.

Dear Greg:

Pay in cash, if you want to deny involvement.

Page 179 of the report names Gregg Zaun. The truth hurts, doesn't it?

Apparently, Zaun is a Communist.

Gregg Zaun. You are a dishonor on your entire family (including your uncle, Babe Ruth).
   22. Roxpert Posted: December 13, 2007 at 10:13 PM (#2644796)
The point of all this is that Greg Zaun made a self-serving comment in the above article, and had to have known all along that he would soon appear in the report. For that, Zaun is the real moron.
   23. Esoteric Posted: December 13, 2007 at 11:08 PM (#2644936)
I pronounce this thread hilaripus.

Roxpert = winner. It may have been injudicious for him to come out and say (in advance) that Zaun's statement brought suspicion upon himself, but I thought the exact same thing myself, and he was ultimately proven right: the fact is that the reason people make the sorts of instinctive leaps that Roxpert did is because, more often than not, they end up being correct. Just as importantly, the reason that we don't accept such instinctive reasoning as having the force of law or logic is because there are cases in which that ends up NOT being correct. But let's not kid ourselves: the majority of human beings don't play the role of disinterested devil's advocate - that's left to the lawyerly types like many of us on BBTF - they speak up because they worry that they're under the gun too. Vulgar perceived self-interest has always been, and always will be, the prime mover in human affairs.

I'm pretty sure Greg Zaun just got pwned.

And Esoteric is right.

I wonder if Roxpert is Tracy Ringoldsby.
