Jayson Stark: Ryan Howard Ready to Rumble

For one thing, the two sides haven’t spent 10 seconds talking about a deal since the arbitration hearing. For another, Howard and agent Casey Close continue to position him as an unprecedented player, who therefore deserves an unprecedented contract.

So there’s no sign they view the Cabrera deal as being any more applicable to Howard’s situation than, say, what Mark Teixeira will get in free agency this winter or what Matt Holliday will rake in the winter after that.

Which means that eventually, the Phillies’ biggest decision almost certainly isn’t going to be what to pay Howard. It’s when to trade Howard.

t’s when to trade Howard.
I think it's inevitable. I was fantasizing about a Howard + prospect for Kemp, Loney and Kershaw when I thought there was chance that Pierre was going to be the LF. Alas, a fantasy

Sort of on the subject but not really: In an alternate universe, would a team consisting of an infield of Howard, Fielder, Dunn, and Pujols give back enough on defense to negate their offensive contributions? Granted, Albert is really good defensively at 1B, but he's not a guy you want at shortstop.

I'm just wondering where the tipping point is between great-hit and no-field (or, conversely, no-hit and great-field).

(It's entirely possible that it is Friday night and my mind is all pops and buzzes at this point.)

I know this isn't what your point was, but it would be really interesting to see what would happen with a staff of strikeout pitchers or if you couldnt afford them, flyball pitchers. Basically see how few groundballs you could create to minimize the damage.

Either way, I'd definitely pay a lot of money to watch that team play!

That pitching staff would be a good fit with the HFDP infield.

Somebody here once did a DM sim of 9 Bondses (including DH). As a C, he did have something like 200 passed balls. Still, the team scored a gargantuan number of runs (maybe 2,000+) and did great in the win column. I don't remember who was used as the pitching staff -- probably the Giants real staff.
