Jim Salisbury: Phillies’ Gillick not sweating about Lidge surgery | Philadelphia Inquirer | 02/25/20

Pat Gillick didn’t get to be one of the best GMs in the game by being uninformed.

Moments after learning that his big off-season acquisition would require knee surgery and probably won’t be ready for opening day, Pat Gillick huddled in his office with Charley Kerfeld, one of his top lieutenants, yesterday afternoon.

The laptop computer was open, and Gillick was reading aloud when a reporter entered the room.

Scouting report?

Uh, not really.

Gillick was captivated by the story of a Michigan restaurant that had a 134-pound burger on its menu. Apparently, it took three men to flip the sucker.

“It’s in the Detroit Free Press,” the Phillies’ general manager said.

Charley Kerfeld? I always pictured him heading back to a sod farm in Arkansas or some such.

I actually think this is a pretty genuine attitude by Gillick. You can't last as long as he has in baseball if you treat every thing that doesn't go your way as a mortal blow.

I wouldn't want my GM reacting any other way than he has here.

When asked whom he was voting for in the presidential election, Gillick opined, "I need a new pair of socks, these have holes."

Dr. Memory,

You've perfectly encapsulated my own sense of Pat Gillick, formed during a Phils' broadcast where he didn't seem to be familiar with the names of his own ballplayers. The 21st century Phillies anyway.
