JOBA’S SHOULDER BEARS WATCHING (RR)

Wait, wait…Danny Aiello’s boltonian nephew said that Joba was only taken out because Girardi was “treating this game like the seventh game of a World Series…to protect Mussina’s 20th win.”

For the second time inside of two months, Joba Chamberlain experienced discomfort in his valuable right shoulder Sunday at Fenway Park.

According to several people, Chamberlain said the shoulder was tight after exiting the first game of the doubleheader against the Red Sox when he walked Jason Bay and gave up a ground-rule double to Mark Kotsay in the eighth inning.

The same people said Chamberlain didn’t appear too concerned about it. However, Chamberlain is the face of the Yankees’ pitching future and the slightest physical problem with him is cause for concern. Especially with the Yankees targeting starting pitching as the No. 1 area they have to upgrade this winter.

...According to a scout who recently tracked Chamberlain, tightness could be why his velocity was down during the final two weeks of the season.

“He was throwing 91 mph and a lot of sliders,” the scout said of Chamberlain, whose fastball was clocked at 97-98 mph before he spent almost a month on the DL with rotator-cuff tendinitis.

if chamberlain and or rivera pitched in that game when they shouldn't have, and further exacerbated existing injuries, all for no reason, i will be severely disappointed. I like Mussina as much as anyone, but is getting him to a round counting stat in a lost season worth risking the most valuable arm in the organization, and putting unneeded strain onto an arm signed to a pretty exorbitant contract? If there was the slightest hint that either had a hangnail, neither should have even been in the stadium.

Rivera is fine. His shoulder is the same it's been all season.

Yes, Joba's Shoulder Bears are Watching. But what are they watching? The postseason? The NFL? Dancing with Stars?

So this is a "Joba's being overused" week, not a "They're babying Joba" week?

Well, his velocity was off a little and he was throwing a lot of sliders, but according to Gameday, he hit 95 and 96 with his fastball a good number of times until the last game.

"Joba's Shoulder Bears" sounds like they should be sponsoring a little league team, like Chico's Bail Bonds sponsored the Bad News Bears.

I'm to the point where I think the non-stathead media is actively pushing for him to be a reliever so they can say, "We were right" and then write a ton of articles about how valuable it is to have a closer.
