Joe Mauer: Well Played

Joe Mauer, current cover-gracer of the MLB The Show video games series. Money quote:

I’ll strike out as myself and say something like, ‘C’mon, I could’ve hit that.’

We also learn that the Twins are video-game junkies, too.

I must say that commercial with him and the PS3 guy, is hilarious. Also that game is so freaking hard, even with all the sliders moved to easy and in beginners mode, I can't hit for crap. But man can I pitch.

I dunno, I'm a real fan of MLB2K's pitching motions. Throwing a 12-6 curve feels different from throwing a circle change feels different from throwing the heater. It's not as pretty a game, but it's more intuitive.

"Well left."
"Well played."
"Well well."
"Well bred."
(dies) "Ah!"

I never play these games as a rule, but I agree that the Mauer MLB The Show commercial is a gem. The guy's got charisma.

I assume that these video games are where Mauer learned to bunt in RBI situations. Of course, since that great outrage occured, the Twins are 7-1, outscoring their opponents 66-16, so maybe it was some genius motivation tactic.

And Mauer's been hitting the ball like, well, Joe Mauer, since then, too.

The Pedroia one was even better.

"I'm not even allowed in Mexico" still cracks me up.

I don't know how the guy thought he was going to convince Mauer he really didn't know who he was. Obviously he knows they took lots of photos on their trip. And what's his motivation anyway? He just wants to rib his boy by pretending he hasn't heard of him? Doesn't seem very realistic.

That guy is great in all those MLB ads. I think he was also in the Holiday Inn ads of a couple years ago and I liked him there too.

And....indeed he was. "What is he, a clown?" "I hope so." Why do I still find this so hilarious?

Who is this guy? He's awesome. Can we give him his own show?

This guy is pretty funny in this Geico commercial.

Yup, his name is Kevin Butler, apparently. Small part in this Everybody Loves Raymond episode. Since then he has become a coveted commercial actor. I see that as the equivalent of a talented AAAA player going to Japan and becoming a minor star there.

Kevin Butler is the name of the guy he plays in the commercial, his name is actually Jerry Lambert.

Definitely not Butt Head.

The Pedroia one was even better.

I had completely forgotten about the Pedroia commercial.

As much as I would love to have been a MLB star, I know realize I'd probably have been happier as a AAAA guy who hangs around for a long time. You make decent money for a typical middle-class American, you get to see great baseball and you play every now and again.

Of course, not having A ball talent sort of squelches that.

I can see the same for acting. Sure, you'd like to be a star, but if you can just find a way to stay in the business, make a decent wage, and do some cool bits, that would be a good life, I think.

I don't know, I'd guess those long bus rides and Motel 6's get real old after 2 or 3 years.

Petagine wound up making quite a bit of money in his career, but that was mostly due to the big contracts he earned in Japan.

We'll see what happens with Matt Murton if he keeps hitting. He's due to make around 1.7 mil in total for two years if the Tigers pick up his option (which seems likely).

I must be getting old. I don't get the point of that commercial either. It's not that it's unrealistic, since nearly all commercials are unrealistic. I just don't understand what "Kevin Butler" was trying to do.

I like the guy in the Heineken commercials who hangs out with old people. Not sure of the point of those commercials either. Heineken's image is that of a beer for old people, and they admit it, but they try to point out the plus side? I never thought Heineken's image was that of a beer for old people.

What's the deal with those State Farm commercials? Is that guy well-known for something? He acts like Howie Long, wandering around and expecting strangers to recognize him. He looks like a cross between John Stamos and Michael Jackson circa 2006.

My question: what's with using random smaller mammals for commercials lately? First there's the Kia commercial with all the gerbils. Now I saw one yesterday with kittens for something (Wendy's, maybe?). I'll admit, the Kia one set to Fat Boy Slim cracks me up.

He has to compete against Flo from Progressive, the Kim Possible clone from E-surance, the quadruple threat of the Caveman, the pile of money, the Gecko and the super-serious narrator from Geico and President David Palmer from Allstate.

[15] Still doesn't walk a whole lot (tho he's bested his season total from last year) & I'm guessing his defense still has a nice personality, but, yeah, it looks like Delmon has discovered his inner Garrett Anderson (the Anaheim one) and given it some PEDs.

22: Make that quintuple threat -- to include Ryan Zimmerman in DC-area GEICO commercials.

Not a fan of that trend. But my least favorite may be the families of mesothelioma. Gotta admit, I'm starting to root for the mesothelioma, or at least for the Wrightnows to become the latest family to qualify for membership.

Isn't the point that he's supposed to be an idiot?

Ugh, I don't like that guy at all. He's supposed to look boyish and friendly, I guess, but to me he seems slippery. Jerry Lambert eats him for lunch!

State Farm must be feeling the heat...I'm sure this is the first time they've ever acknowledged Geico and Progressive.

I spend too much time analyzing commercials.

From what I gather, most people find him creepy.

Similiarly, the McDonalds guy who's a complete douche until he has his coffee. That commercial would be a lot more gratifying if, just once, somebody punches him before he gets to the counter.

I think that's about right. There was a previous PS3 commercial where he denied the impending price cut was real.

"I could hit you."

"Pffft."

"Pffft, let's do it!"

I don't think he's an idiot exactly, he's just entirely fixated on selling Playstation products. He doesn't have an off mode. Of course, the Mexico photo does somewhat contradict that, but I figure it was just wining and dining a potential spokesman.
