Josh Beckett to 15-day DL

The Red Sox announced moments ago that Josh Beckett is suffering from a strained right elbow and has been placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Aug. 18.

Leskanic! at the Disco.

All this means is he won't start before Tuesday. It frees up a roster spot until the rosters expand.

strange timing to post this ominous story

Someone take a picture. And post it. With an easily-remembered URL. Thanks.

Bostons season is over, they just lost a pitcher that has been almost as effective as Kyle Lohse this season.

It's just a flesh wound

Apply league adjustment, and he's about 74 times better than Lincecum

If this is true, I don't want to believe in league adjustment. That said, it doesn't seem right.

Its seem you haven't been issued with the latest version of the Levski sarcasm detector. If you plan to hang around here, you might as well apply for one.

oops!

The league adjustment is probably around 2-4 runs for a full time player over an entire season which really isn't much when considering a player's performance. It's not nearly as great as some people make it out to be.

Russlan, you should change your handle to "defender of AAAA".

(I'm kidding of course, I agree on the 2-4 run adjustment, and that it isnt really a big deal.)

Exhibit A: C.C. Sabathia.
Exhibit B: Rich Harden.

AAAA indeed.

AAAA indeed.

Funny that a White Sox fan would say this considering that team's best player was a horrible player in the NL last season. Also, what do you make of Livan Hernandez, who posted a 5.50 ERA in the AL which has doubled in the NL with Colorado? Mark Teixeira's OPS+ with the Angels is 60 points higher than it was with the Braves this year.

The AL is better and that's pretty much undeniable but the difference is greatly exaggerated by some around here.

The shoulder that he had surgery on had nothing to do with that. Nope -- nothing at all.

Considering that I had written Beckett off for this year after his most recent disappointing start the article is encouraging to say the least

Livan Hernandez's ERA doubled because he gave up 9 ER in one start. He sucked in the AL, too.

Even not including that start, his NL ERA is 2.40 runs higher in the NL than it was in the AL. The issue is not how much Livan Hernandez sucks, just that he sucked more in the NL than he did in the AL.

Lots of guys switch leagues and some of them do better and some worse. The disparity in quality is not so great that you can assume a significantly different performance.

#5 sure has been giving Beckett a ton of #### any time his name has been brought up in recent news items. I don't like the guy, either, but what gives?
