Justice: Astros manager Cooper in no-win situation

When is the last time the Astros made a really smart move? None of Wade’s significant moves has worked out the way he hoped.

Before him, there was Tim Purpura. He traded for Jason Jennings and Aubrey Huff and signed Woody Williams. About the closest he came to a really good deal was the signing of Lee. It’s hard to look at that one as shrewd since it was a matter of outbidding everyone else. To find a really smart one, you probably have to go back to Aug. 27, 2004, when Gerry Hunsicker got Dan Wheeler from the Mets for minor leaguer Adam Seuss.

Anyway, as the Astros now occupy last place alone, it’s a good topic for discussion. It’ll take your mind off the sorry, no-account ballclub.

Anyway, back to Cooper and his reaction to the loss that dropped the Astros into last place.

“We won’t give up,” he said. “You guys might write us off, but we’re going to keep playing.”

until the whole damn schedule is done! (psst...why’d we book so many games?)

Lee? Carlos Lee and his hilariously bad contract?

Mind you, he's not saying the Lee contract was GOOD--just that it was relatively less awful than other recent Astro moves. I don't know that I agree, but the 'stros haven't exactly been a beacon of outstanding planning lately.

EDIT: OK, I suppose "closest he came to a really good deal" means he thinks the Lee contract was objectively good. That said, I'd say it doesn't really stand out among the ocean of awfulness that the last two Astros GM-ships have been.

If Lee could play left field better than a statue the contract wouldn't be bad at all. Well at least right now. I didn't realize this was only second year of it, and fat guys who don't walk and can't field don't age very well. Unless being fat counts as an "old player skill"?

Yeah, Lee's pretty hilarious out there, but he's still better than Dunn.

As another Cooper would say...

One thing I miss: Houston Astros and the fans they diss
I watched those goofs striking out under the Minute Maid Park roof
Houston Astros let me squeeze you in my arms
Houston Astros come and freeze me with your charms

One thing
No lie
Offense frigid as an eskimo pie
Shoulda stood in bed
Well you oughta know that their season's dead

Houston Astros let me squeeze you in my arms
Houston Astros come and freeze me with your charms
