Justin Upton fell a single shy of the cycle in his Arizona home debut

Justin Upton fell a single shy of the cycle in his Arizona home debut but it wasn’t enough to beat Tom Gorzelanny and the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night.

...

Gorzelanny (10-6) allowed four hits, three of them by the 19-year-old Upton, brought up from Double-A Mobile last Thursday. Upton tripled in the second, homered in the fourth and doubled in the seventh.

Upton grounded out to second to end the game.

Nice game for J-Up to help me feel better about EByrnes blocking the rest of AZ’s outfield prospects for the next three years.

Upton jumped all the way to third on the Diamondbacks in extra-base hits with his performance yesterday, trailing only Byrnes and Hudson. All kidding aside, this guy looks like he is going to be a superstar.

He missed out on the cycle because he couldn't get the easy one? Not clutch. I now have serious questions about his make-up.

Would he have been the youngest to hit for the cycle had he done it?

I, for one, welcome our new Uptonian overlord.

It's ironic that Upton and Gorzellany went head to head like that. I thought that a decent trade at the deadline would have been Gorzelany for Gonzalez and Chad Tracy. DBacks get another starter for two guys that they're obviously not going to use for a number of years. The Pirates could have even thrown in someone useful (like Doumit or Nady) to include an even better hitter (even someone like Young if they're really going to use Byrnes in CF).

Gorz + Nady for Gonzalez, Tracy, and Young would have been relatively fair given the uncertainty of the DBacks starting pitching.

Holy crap. I wish I'd stayed up for the game, now.

Pass.

If the Dbacks had any marketing acumen, Justin Upton would be the face of the franchise this morning, not the overpaid left fielder. Not surprisingly, the big press conference yesterday didn't bring any extra fans to the game... and the majority of those who came left before Upton's last at bat, when he was going for the cycle.

Eric Byrnes is not your saviour, Moorad and Kendrick. No one can save you from your stupidity.

This is the 261st time a player has missed a cycle by a single since 1957. I never would've guessed it happened so many times.

During the television broadcast, Sutton and Grace said he indeed would have been the youngest. Apparently Mel Ott is the youngest, although I have not taken the time to verify that myself. Ott was 20 when he did so.

Another factoid shared by the broadcasting team was that Fred Lewis was the earliest to hit for the cycle when he did so for the Giants earlier this year in only his 16th (I think?) career game. Obviously, J-Up would have surpassed that one last night, as well.

A friend of mine described him to me this way after seeing his triple yesterday:

"Bo Jackson athleticism with baseball skills"

And Manny Ramirez's talent for heady plays in the outfield and on the basepaths!

JK: I am a little concerned by all his early snafus and wonder that if even his bat is ready, whether he needs more work on baserunning and hitting the cut off man.

I'd say it's a given that he needs work on the finer points of the game. I also think that those things WILL come in time.

I'll be REALLY excited when I see his first multi walk game. ;)

He looks to have an eye for the zone. I don't know if it'll turn into walks, but he isn't up there flailing and guessing.

He may even be better than Luis Terrero when it's all said and done.

No disagreement with any of your assessments of Upton, but I am curious what you have seen: I confess I probably haven't seen 1/2 of his at bats so far (too busy), but what I have seen leads me to wonder why he is getting so many good pitches to hit? I thought the pitches he hit for the 3B and 2B last night were meatballs.

Like Robert, I have been impressed that he has not been chasing stuff, CQ-style. But is it me, or has he NOT been getting much out of the zone? (His HR is the exception - that was reminiscent of Vlad.)

Better than Terrero? LOL. We'll only know for certain after we see how he handles the ol' hidden ball.
