K-Rod: I have no idea who Gossage is

Goose who? Francisco Rodriguez is just fine with Goose Gossage’s assessment of him.

Gossage referred to K-Rod as a “clown” in a recent interview, citing Rodriguez’s penchant for theatrics on the mound, but Rodriguez shrugged off Gossage’s comment Tuesday.

“I have no idea who he is,” Rodriguez said.

Told about Gossage, a Hall of Fame reliever who had his best years pitching for the Yankees in the 1970s and ‘80s, Rodriguez took the high road.

“We all have an opinion,” Rodriguez said. “That’s his opinion and you’ve got to respect it. I don’t care. It doesn’t bother me at all.”

That’s a different stance than Rodriguez took last season, when Brian Bruney made a similar comment. Rodriguez sought out Bruney the following day during batting practice at Yankee Stadium and had to be restrained from the Yankees reliever.

Well, he is kind of a clown. Odd that a guy nicknamed Goose--just like the great Goose Tatum--was Mr. Serious all the time, but there ya go. Life is funny.

Aside from the fact that he probably knows exactly who Gossage is and this is just his (somewhat feeble) default response when someone gets under his skin - who really cares ? I mean, considering K-Rod was born in Venezuela in 1982 and Gossage's best years were behind him by the mid-80's, would it really be such a sin if he didn't know who he was ? It's not like Gossage is a Mets or Angels legend or anything and I'm not sure if MLB.tv was available in Venezuela in 1987.

My students sometimes tell me things like "Mr. Teacher Dude, I couldn't find a webpage on this subject, so I couldn't do any research on it. Sorry."

Internet + web research skills = history

mlb.tv + broadband connection = baseball history

Anything less just doesn't add up. Needless to say, those relief pitchers who don't study baseball history are doomed...just plain doomed.

I don't know that I'd call it feeble - it's just about the most cutting response available to him, honestly. Gossage has a very healthy opinion of himself.

Yeah but he keeps using the same response.
When he said he didn't know who Brian Bruney was, I believed him. I know he is a big fat toad-like creature who dresses from the devil's wardrobe but I could realistically believe that Frankie had better things to do with himself than to keep up to date with every hack reliever out there.
But now he pulls out the same retort for Gossage and it has lost some of its edge. As I said above, it's possible that he hasn't heard of Gossage but I'm starting to get skeptical.
I don't know what would tip me over the edge for sure. Maybe 'Who is JJ Putz?'.

It's not like he saw much of Putz in the bullpen last year. I'd prefer to hear something like "Who is David Wright" or "Who is Omar Minaya."

Oh, I don't know. Gossage always struck me as someone who just couldn't wait to tell you how great he was, how he did things the "right" way, and how nobody else these days is as professional/sound/f'n awesome as he was back in his day. I'm sure that Goose, as we live and breathe, is working up a fresh head of steam over K-Rod's comment. He's just waiting for some media guy to call.

I remember Mickey Mantle once being asked about Ball Four and responding, "Who's Jim Bouton?"

I laughed then. I laughed today. I guess I'm just a sucker for that line.

I suppose they can be read in a mutually contradictory fashion, but I think you pretty much have to be doing so willfully.

I think it's pretty obvious that he meant (A) Gossage is entitled to speak his opinion, and (B) he is not concerned with Gossage's opinion. These are not remotely mutually contradictory.

I was fortunate to work with Bouton' son Michael back in the the early 90s. Great guy.
