KC Star: Guillen and McClure separated after exchanging harsh words in clubhouse before game

Outfielder JosĂ© Guillen initiated a near-brawl with pitching coach Bob McClure in the Royals’ clubhouse before Saturday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. Witnesses said no blows were exchanged, but the two had to be separated after exchanging heated words. Guillen remained in the lineup as the designated hitter.

Guillen is thought to have been upset at what he considered excessive supervision by coaches in the clubhouse. The coaches’ lockers in the visitors’ clubhouse at Tropicana Filed are located alongside the players’ lockers.

Witnesses said Guillen knocked over a chair near his locker and began talking in a loud voice. When McClure told Guillen to be quiet, Guillen responded by knocking over another chair and moving toward McClure.

Kietzman will crap his panties on Monday.......anything to get him away from playing Advertising jeopardy is good I guess, but that dude bogs down an otherwise fairly savvy baseball line up on 810, i.e., Soren and some of the support guys throughout the day. Anyway, I don't mind Guillen blowing up. What, is McClure 12?

In my experience, people don't like being told to shut up, especially in front of other people.

Let me check with the Royals MLB board members to see if Jose Guillen still isn't a clubhouse cancer.

Guillen is a god damn rollercoaster. We've been getting ripped off by him for most of the first 4 months.

Hi, I'm Bob McClure. You might know me from such films as "Excessive Supervision" and "Shut up, Jose"...

Jose Guillen's like Brando in The Wild One: "What are you rebelling against?" "What've ya got?" Maybe it's because he got traded around so often early in his career, usually with the tag that he's fallen short of his Next Clemente talent, but the guy's been a real problem child in Anaheim, in Washington, and now in Kansas City. He's got skills and could help a lot of teams, but I wouldn't want him on my team.

I never quite realized that Jose Guillen was comparable to Kevin McReynolds through 31, or that McReynolds was a better hitter.

McReynolds could have gotten $12M a year if he played these days.

McReynolds was a hell of a player.

Guillen is a hell of an #######.

According to "The Bad Guys Won", McReynolds was the exact opposite of Guillen. That is, when the Mets traded for him, he alienated the clubhouse by being completely apathetic and unemotional, and not seeming to notice whether either he or the team did a good job. And trading the much more Guillen-like Kevin Mitchell for him was portrayed as something that damaged the team's will to succeed.

He's more like Lisa Simpson when she said the same thing.

So the key to success for the 1986 Mets was to be the biggest ####### you possibly could be? Did they have daily contests to see who was the leader in this particular category?

McClure should have just phoned the Rays pen and told Troy Percival to explain to his guys that Guillen's helmet needed cracking.

Yeah, the 73 runs he created above average in four years, the .536 slugging percentage in the 1988 NLCS, the 33 consecutive successful stolen base attempts over a season-and-a-half ... if only the rest of the Mets had McReynolds' lack of "will to succeed".
