Ken Williams on job with Cubs: ‘That would be a betrayal’

Or as statesman turned Cardinal, John Charles de Gall, once said..."In baseball it is necessary either to betray one’s team or the fans. I prefer to betray the fans.”

Asked Wednesday about the different environments that surround the teams, Williams pulled no punches.

‘’It is so different,’’ Williams said. ‘’You might as well build a border, a Great Wall of China on Madison, because we are so different. We might as well be in two different cities. ‘’The unfortunate thing for me is it’s a shame that a certain segment of Chicago refused to enjoy a baseball championship being brought to their city. The only thing I can say is, ‘Happy anniversary.’’’

Williams was referring, of course, to the 2005 World Series trophy prominently displayed at 333 W. 35th St., and the Cubs’ 100 years of futility across town.

He wasn’t done there. Early in his career as GM, talks of budget constraints would creep up. So hours before the Sox played the Pittsburgh Pirates, Williams was asked—if the opportunity presented itself—if he could imagine ever being GM of the deep-pocketed, throw-money-at-every-hole Cubs.

‘’That would be a betrayal,’’ Williams said before a long pause. ‘’God, I would really, really have to need the job. Oh, wow, really need the job.’’

I'd take Josh Byrnes over the next seven years over Omar Minaya over the next seven minutes, any day of the week

That's not very nice. You're doing a good job, no need to be a jerk.

You have to agree with him though...

Am I the only one who has no idea what the first two posts are referring to? Did Repoz change his lede after initially posting?

Or I'd suspect multiple windows open, and one of them was this thread, and one of them was the Webb thread from last night

I'd take the right thread over the next seven years over the wrong thread over the next seven minutes, any day of the week.

My bad about the first post. This is what I wanted to refer to.

The only thing I can say is, ‘Happy anniversary.’’’

Williams doesn't need to be petty and condescending.

Williams doesn't need to be petty and condescending.

He's not talking about Cubs brass. He's talking about Cubs fans, bandwagoners and otherwise.

He's just stoking the fire that already burns pretty hot around these here parts. It's just fun is all. The Cubs-Sox series is about to begin.

The White Sox have had higher payrolls in 2006, 2007,and 2008.

What other GM would say this? That's awesome.

The White Sox have had higher payrolls in 2006, 2007,and 2008.

It did say earlier in his career. And, earlier in his career, the White Sox had a much lower payroll than they do now.

It's the annual tradition - the White Sox try to play up the importance of the series, while the Cubs try to play it down.

I find the series to be endlessly annoying.

Kenny is playing to his audience. For South Side fans, this is Armageddon, a la N.C. State vs. UNC in just about anything.

I can't believe my season ticket holding friends refuse to avoid the games and profit from what's essentially a big, loud hassle with some baseball.

Actually, South Side fans think Armageddon is the World Series. You know, since they've all seen their team play in it.

What in truth gets us is that while for us it's NCS vs. UNC, for them it's Coppin St. vs. UNC. ACKNOWLEDGE US, OH PLEASE!!!!

But you live in the Bay Area, IIRC. You don't have to deal with certain types of Cubs fans. Or my Cubs-fan brother. 8-)
