Kevin Millar swings at World Series pitch

“I’m guaranteeing a 2008 World Series. Everybody else is,” Millar said while standing at this locker before yesterday’s first full-squad workout.

“I’m going on the record right now. We’re going to shock the world. I don’t know who Dempster is in Chicago, but if he thinks he’s going to win the World Series, he has to come through us first.”

This is why I love spring training, hope springs so eternal that even teams like the 2008 Orioles can joke that they may have a chance to make it to the World Series.

But then again, Millar very well still think he’s on the Red Sox, so maybe he meant it literally.

I don’t know who Dempster is in Chicago

That's awesome.

Fascinating guarantee!

Here's mine: not only will the Orioles have consecutive losing season number 11, they'll finish with a worse record than the Nationals again, for the fourth year in a row.

Till the second part of the comment, I thought he was just guaranteeing that there will be a World Series. That would have been a fun comment, even from Millar.

I'm going to guarantee a 2008 World Series too.

If I had done this every year for the last century, I would have been right 99% of the time.

To say nothing of 100% this century. I like those odds!

Correction: 98%, AROM.

Nope. If you're talking the 20th century, he'd have been right only 96 percent of the time (not counting 1900). If you're talking the last 100 years, then his 99 percent is correct.

If by "century" he means the 20th century, then he's 96% correct. If he means the last 100 years, 99%.

Funny, if y'all had shut the TV off and put your head in a spreadsheet once in a while, you'd know these things.

Damn you, SoSH U!

I like to imagine that Millar genuinely has no idea who Ryan Dempster is even though they were on the same team for five years.

"Oh, that guy? I always wondered what his name was. OK, never mind, he's cool, his team can win the World Series."
   12. Padraic Posted: February 21, 2008 at 01:16 PM (#2696577)
Hey, if Rickey Henderson can forget Olerud, anything is possible.

Worse, he thinks he's still on the Red Sox, and that the Red Sox are in the same league as the Cubs.

Instead of "eerie", I'd go with "predictable".

If someone makes a great point about baseball but accidentally thinks that Lieutenant Commander Data served aboard Deep Space Nine, he's immediately shouted down and shamed on this board.

I once saw a disagreement between posters here in which one poster criticized the number of dots in the other poster's ellipses.

I wasn't commenting on the fact that we both had the same correction, but the similar way we structured our posts.

And if Kevin feels shouted down and shamed by my post, I offer my humblest apologies.

You guys were arguing over a couple of percentage points?

Chris, the link didn't work, and I don't think I want it to.

I meant the century from 1908-2007. Or does a century have to start with one and end with a nice round number?

I think the phrase "last century" is what trips you. It's ambiguous.

Were we arguing?

If someone makes a great point about baseball but accidentally thinks that Lieutenant Commander Data served aboard Deep Space Nine, he's immediately shouted down and shamed on this board.

I was hoping to throw back a snark-laden post about how Data never achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander, or that he did appear on the 28th Episode of Deep Space Nine but it's debatable whether he "served" or merely visited, but the amount of research I'd have to do to learn such details about a show (or shows) I never watched didn't seem like the proper investment of my time. I think I had enough snark at the bottom of post 8 to satisfy your concerns.

And if Kevin feels shouted down and shamed by my post, I offer my humblest apologies.

Just to be different from SoSH U, I've decided that I want kevin to feel shouted down and shamed by my post. I think it's about as likely as Crisp having an offensive resurgence, but what the hey.

I meant the century from 1908-2007. Or does a century have to start with one and end with a nice round number?

I think posts 7 and 8 both give that as a viable option - not that you need our permission.

More lame stuff from Dempster and good stuff from Millar:

"It's kind of hard to go deep off me if you're wearing one in the ribs every time up," he said. "Who's he, the Cowboy Up guy? Ooh, the big Cowboy Up, ride that pony or whatever he does in his cowboy boots and his 1.5 Hummers. Yeah, pretty bold prediction, huh?

"If he wants to do that, you can tell him that I welcome the challenge. It'd be fun, mano-a-mano, facing each other. We play them this year, right?"

The Orioles visit Wrigley Field June 24-26.

"I welcome that any day of the week," Dempster said. "Hopefully, I'll be scheduled to start."

Maybe the wind will be blowing out, too.

"Perfect," Dempster said. "He's going to need it."

"If Dempster threw it at my ribs, that means he's trying to go down and away," Millar said. "He has no command, no control, of any fastball he throws, so he can't tell anybody where he's going to throw the baseball. The young man made the [2000] All-Star team with the Fighting Fish [Florida Marlins] because they had to take somebody. The guy's lived off the 2000 All-Star stuff for many, many, many years and I'm tired of hearing about it.

"There's a Budweiser sign in Wrigley Field. He'll try to throw the fastball down and away and it might get away from him and hit me. The next at-bat, he's going to try to throw a hanging slider and I'm going hit it off the Budweiser sign.

"He watched the '04 World Series. He knows who the Cowboy Up guy is because he was on the couch that year. He hadn't been to the playoffs, he hadn't been to the big dance. He was barbecuing with his friends and family that year."

I'm pretty sure he did in one of the movies, he had to walk on a plank on a ship in the Holo deck or something. It's been about 6 years since I've watched anything related to Star Trek though, so I am probably wrong.
