Kid Can Do It All on One Leg

“I was a little hesitant when we first brought him up here for baseball,” Michelle said. “I thought his spirit might be crushed if he got out every time. Then I thought, who am I to micromanage his feelings? He’s going to have to learn how to deal with this stuff.

“The more I shelter him, the more he’ll think, ‘I’m fragile.’ I don’t think I’ll ever tell him he can’t do something.”

At bat, his athletic skill and balance allow him to take a full swing, and he usually makes contact. He hops to first base as quickly as he can. If he’s safe, he uses crutches to run the bases. When he gets thrown out, he hops dejectedly back to the dugout.

...

Adam tried using a prosthesis but didn’t like it because he felt it slowed him down. He is adamant about not using a wheelchair.

There is a video at the site of his playing catcher, hitting, and running the bases.

This is entirely awesome.

I have a boy exactly his age, and collisions at home plate during my boy's games are almost unthinkable...this must be one competitive league.

And what Cabbage said.

Shades of Willie McQueen. Good for Adam. Not a bad-looking swing in the photo, either.

Stories about plucky people overcoming handicaps are like crack for me. Another good one: Prince Randian.

It is indeed very inspiring to see a young boy play catcher in little league, despite the fact that he is left handed.

I was thinking about that guy that will be running in the Olympics with two prosthetic legs - do you think such a player would be allowed in the big leagues? I guess I can't see a reason why not, especially if its allowed in track and field, but you never know with some of the meatheads that run the game.

He has great wheel.

I honestly thought this was going to be another fluff piece about Griffey Jr. I'm pleasantly surprised!

He makes Kirk Gibson look like a #####.

I was kind of disappointed that when he went into second to break up the double play, he didn't use his crutches to take out the shortstop.

The slide into 2nd from the crutches was ####### great.

However, no, I do not think using crutches should be allowed in a major league baseball game.
