Klapisch: Don’t count out Bobby V

The Day the ?? Died…

How does that relate to Valentine? Only that he remains the most logical response for the Wilpon family if the Mets fail to conquer the Phillies this year. The longer Valentine has been away from Flushing, the kinder history looks upon his reign; it’s clear his firing by Steve Phillips in 2002 was driven solely by personal dislike and not by sound baseball judgment.

Phillips’ acumen largely has been discounted now that he works for ESPN and mindlessly decrees, among other things, that the Mets can’t win with Carlos Beltran. Not that Valentine is gloating or even talking about his former boss. To the contrary, Valentine has his hands full with his present-day employers, the Chibba Lotte Marines, who decided months ago to fire him after this season.

Valentine laughs when he says, “It’s a challenging situation.” All-out war is more like it. Fans loyal to Valentine are protesting, conducting daily vigils to convince Marines’ ownership to bring him back.

Valentine, however, doesn’t expect a thaw.

“I really don’t think they’re going to say, ‘We made a mistake, we were only kidding,’ ” Valentine said. “You either appreciate what I’ve done here or you don’t. And they don’t.”

Is it common labor practice in Japan to do the slow-motion firing? I've seen situation Stateside in which everyone knew that a contract or option wouldn't be renewed after a year, but I'm not familiar with a "You'll be fired after this year" statement. It seems to throw a wrench in all incentive systems.

I would crap myself with glee if the Indians hired Valentine.

I'd swap Gangsta Jerry for Bobby Vee ("Take good care of mah...bay-ee-ay-bee...") in a heartbeat.

The Gators did it to Ron Zook a few years ago. They "fired" him halfway through the season, but then let him finish the season while they looked for a new coach.

I can't recall it happening in baseball, though.

I do think the team had gotten tired of Valentine's prima donna side and had tuned him out. I don't think he is the type of guy who can continually get the best out of an American team for a hugely long time (Japan's different.)

That said, no one from the '02 team is still around¹; if they don't make the playoffs, Manuel almost surely will be fired; and I can't think of much of anyone better who would likely be available. So, fine.

¹ Yeah, yeah, Feliciano pitched six innings. Is he really our most senior guy? Wow.

This seems to happen a lot in college football, espcially with guys who are fired then coach in a bowl game.

I'd welcome Bobby V back in a heartbeat. Sorry, Gangsta.

I loved watching Bobby V outmanage Dusty and Larussa 2000. He was a great manager and didnt' get the credit he deserved for deflecting media attention away from his players onto himself. Plus he invented the wrap sandwich!

Didn't Marge Schott do this to Davey Johnson the last year (1995) they won their division? I'm not sure they have made the playoffs since. I know she was prattling all year about how she loved Ray Knight and his wonderful wife Nancy Lopez.
