Klapisch: Goose tells Joba to act like a Yankee

(Attention, major self-serving, name dropping spot forthcoming) Hanging with Klap (and Belth, and the Lederer’s and Camillo the hairy-armed waiter) the other night he had mentioned Mount Gossage might be spewing...so here tis.

But Goose always has hated showboaters, past and especially present day, so when Dellucci told reporters he thought Chamberlain’s response was immature and “bush,” Gossage didn’t hesitate to say, “I’m on Dellucci’s side.

“That’s just not the Yankee way, what Joba did. Let everyone else do that stuff, but not a Yankee,” Gossage said by telephone on Saturday. “What I don’t understand is, the kid’s got the greatest mentor in the world in Mariano [Rivera]. He’s one of the leaders of the team, so you’d think it wouldn’t happen on that team.

“But there’s no one to pass the torch anymore, no one to teach the young kids how to act. The Mets did a lot of that [celebrating] last year, and look how it came back to haunt them.”

Whenever I’m done reading Klapisch I just want to ram my face through the keyboard, the testosterone level gets so high.

But, but, our g-g-generation was supposed to die before it got old.

That said, I don't much go for elaborate self-congratulations either but I don't think the Mets' celebrations caused them to cough up a big lead.

I didn't RTFA, but did he suggest Joba immediately get married and then swap wives with Farnsworth?
   5. Belfry Bob  Posted: May 11, 2008 at 10:59 AM (#2776615)
Forget it, Goose. No one named 'Joba' could ever be a True Yankee.

kevin, don't a lot of Sox fans dislike Dan Shaughnessy, despite his fanboy tendencies? Stupidity trumps loyalty.

act like a yankee?

you mean like sparky lyle pooping on birthday cakes? real grown up. sure guys they were all like stone face out there pitching and hitting

or reggie jackson doing bout anything to get face?

actually, it would be kewl to see what things would be like if you could put reggie 1977 right now as a yankee the way tv/blogs/media are

i mean i know people prefer stuff like what if the nazis won type plots, but reggie + modern media is a LOT more interesting to me

Shaughnessy is a fanboy of the Red Sox? That's like saying kevin's a fanboy of steroids.

Not that Joba knows much about rock-n-roll.

So who is Chamberlain supposed to fight on the Yankees who is equivalent to Cliff Johnson? Shelley Duncan? Chad Moeller? Morgan Ensberg?

yet another example of how MLB's inability to attract African-Americans is hurting the game

Well said. Shaughnessy likes the Red Sox in the same way the FBI likes Al Queda.

And it's gotten worse since they eliminated the income stream he was expecting for continued reissues of Curse of the Bambino. Currently number 956,624 in sales on Amazon. His attempt to cash in on the success, Reversing the Curse was a dog from the beginning and now sits at #580,210 in sales.

I'm surprised the Yankee fans are getting on Klapisch since Klapisch is the biggest Yankee suck-up writer out there

I think you're too hard on Klap, definitely one of the better columnists in New York. Besides, he's more of a Met guy, always talking about bringing back the "glory of the 80's", as if it can be smuggled across city lines under the cover of night.
   16. Blackadder  Posted: May 11, 2008 at 03:59 PM (#2776976)
Hey, sorry, you guys know better than me. I have only read one or two of his articles--which was more than enough--which seemed pretty suck-uppy, but I guess they could have been the exception. In any case, I think my point that around these parts not being an idiot is normally more important than loyalties holds; I think most Yankees fans here would rather read Joe Posnanski than than most of the regular morons at the Post!

What did Joba do? I could not see anything in the article
   18. 6 - 4 - 3  Posted: May 11, 2008 at 09:02 PM (#2777288)
He did a fist pump after striking a guy out in a relatively "unclutch" situation.
   19. billyshears  Posted: May 11, 2008 at 09:25 PM (#2777340)
I, for one, fully support the New York media turning against Joba Chamberlain.
   20. Raskolnikov  Posted: May 11, 2008 at 10:02 PM (#2777435)
Klapisch is a horrible writer, using his columns to serve his grudges - similar to Plashcke in that manner.
   21. OCD SS  Posted: May 11, 2008 at 10:04 PM (#2777439)
So the problem is that Joba is fist pumping all over the place, or that he's not fist pumping like the rest of the Yankees? I mean, I'm fairly certain that Jeter fist pumped upon today's game being called.
   22. As foretold by the prophesy (JFSE)  Posted: May 11, 2008 at 10:38 PM (#2777501)
Hey, I do a fist pump every time I strike someone out. Then promptly put my hand back on the joystick. Does that mean I'm not a Yankee?
   23. Harry Balsagne Teaches The Correct Way to Hit!!  Posted: May 11, 2008 at 11:46 PM (#2777513)
I hate to nitpick here, but it's not just a fist pump--it's an extended fist pump/scream/stalk around the mound. It's that it's so over the top that people find it objectionable.

What annoys me the most is that his response to the criticism is,"that's just the way I am," as if that's a valid excuse to act like a jackass. Yes, it's the way that you are, and the way that you are is bush as hell. He's lucky he pitches in the AL or he'd get drilled until he learns to act like a professional.

Not if he's pitching relief he won't.
   25. Justin T  Posted: May 12, 2008 at 12:25 AM (#2777519)
His pumping is so over the top that I still don't want him to do well even though he's on my fantasy team. That and he plays for the Yankees, I'm not sure which plays a bigger role in my dislike.
   26. Gonfalon Bubble  Posted: May 12, 2008 at 01:53 AM (#2777535)
Wasn't there a story about a game in which Gossage got out of a regular season jam and then let loose some kind of warrior shriek at the opposing dugout? If so, isn't this along the lines of manager Davey Lopes threatening to drill Rickey Henderson for "showing up" his Brewers by stealing with a 7-run lead, only to have the Elias Bureau reveal the next day that player Davey Lopes had done the exact same thing seven times in his career?

I don't think anyone begrudges that, I think the claim is that Joba does this after every strikeout, no matter how inconsequential?

Just every inning ending strikeout, no matter how inconsequential.

One might argue that what was smuggled under the cover of night led to the early downfall of the '80's mets...

My impression of Joba, possibly faulty, is that he started the season with his act dialed way down, but got it amped back up again when he returned from visiting his sick father.

I think, given the personal backdrop regarding Delucci specifically and the Indians generally going back to last year, that this was a situation that measured above "inconsequential." My guess is that Chamberlain will be more low key in subsequent appearances, but continue to have the odd outburst at predictable moments (e.g. against Boston, following poor outings, etc.). I do get the sense that he is working on toning it down, generally.

Maybe Joba's just offended by the team's mascot and this is his way of showing that.

While the routine is pretty distasteful, the best cure is for Dellucci et al to just keep hitting it back at Joba until one takes his head clean off.
