L.A. Daily News: SHELBURNE: Dodgers’ Hudson disappointed in how season ended

So what’s going on here?

If it’s not money, and it’s not personal, then it must be pride. And with good reason, Hudson’s pride had been wounded.

From the way they go about their business, it’s clear that both Hudson and Torre have an old-school mentality.

There is little room for sit downs, conferences or complaining.

Torre has publicly said that he pulls younger players such as Clayton Kershaw and Jonathan Broxton aside when he feels necessary, but he generally leaves veteran players to deal with things in their own way.

Still, you wonder why Torre would chose letting a proud veteran such as Hudson twist in the wind over pulling him aside to explain why he was rolling with Belliard.

It wasn’t like Hudson was the only Dodger to fade a bit late in the season. Manny Ramirez was never the same player after returning from suspension, yet he was in the lineup every day. Russell Martin struggled for most of the season, Casey Blake wasn’t nearly as effective in the second half compared with the first half. Both kept their jobs.

But not O-Dawg.

another L.A. writer, another series of one sentence paragraphs!

He's also got a 2. then again, it's not all that unusual and probably even taught in j school. Visuality trumps.

Shelburne's hoping that if he can only get his paragraphs further down in size, he can one day work for the Times.

He may not have been up to his usual standards, but who else did the Dodgers have to match his .838 second half OPS?

The Dodger's other catcher was 40 year old Brad Ausmus. He ain't playing every day. Blake was close to being as good in the second half as the first, 114 OPS+ to 126, and a much better option than Mark Loretta. Meanwhile, Belliard hit .351 with power to earn some well deserved playing time.

Torre's a fool for marginally useful utility infielders (Belliard, Sojo, Vizcaino). Hudson should be comforted by the knowledge that other teams' managers and coaches rebuked Torre by giving Hudson a Gold Glove Award. O-Dawg will have plenty of suitors.

Which is why the Dodgers will offer type-A FA to net two draft picks right?

Hudson didn't deserve a gold glove, but he did have a career year at the plate. But if the Dodgers believe that an older player with a worse career OPS+ is a better bet for them next year, I'm all for it. Gotta pay alimony to the Screaming Meanie somehow.

I don't know. He fell 1 AB short of making all of his incentives on his incentive heavy contract, moving it from $3.38M to $8M (minus ashtray money). Would the Dodgers want to pay him, say, $10M in arbitration?

I've been told that arbitration only considers the base salary, not any incentives.

If this is true, then the two decisions are no-brainers.

It would also behoove a player on one of those contracts to have a clause that he cannot be offered arbitration if he's an a-type free agent.

Hudson really wasn't in a strong negotiating position.
