L.A. Times: Arte Moreno picks up tab (RR)

David Ruprecht...stick to politics!

Owner Arte Moreno surprised some three dozen Angels fans by inviting them on an impromptu shopping spree in the team’s gift store after Friday night’s home opener.

Merisa Jensen, a 25-year-old USC senior from Lancaster who has attended the last five Angels’ home openers, said she and her sister Rachel were standing outside Angel Stadium about an hour after the game when Moreno and his wife, Carole, came out and began talking with some of the 30 to 40 people still milling about.

“Suddenly he walked over to the Angels store . . . opened the door and let in the whole group of people,” Jensen said.

The souvenir shop was closed, Jensen said, but Moreno told workers to ring up a T-shirt for everyone. Cashiers gave everybody a hat too.

Everybody except Moreno. Jensen said he was handed a lengthy sales receipt, which he signed.

If there's a more fan-friendly owner than Moreno, I've yet to meet him. And I've met Bill Giles.

Arte Moreno is what every owner should be like.

Arte Moreno ranks as one of the people I'd most like to have a beer with. And thanks to him, beer doesn't cost as much in the big A.

Arte Moreno and Vlad are the reasons I like the Angels. But their multiple CF signings, presence of GA ( and previous presence of Erstad/Eckstein ) pisses me off

I think the Brewers' Attanasio may be comparable.

I was watching the Brewers the other day and seeing Attanasio sitting and chatting it up with the fans really reminded me of the wonderful Michael Burke era of the Yankees.

Arte would've been such a perfect fit for the D-backs. :(

Seriously, if you want to meet him, a good place is at the Diamond Club back of home plate. He can often be seen there having dinner before a game. I was eating there with my parents before a game last year and he was dining solo at a table for two. I didn't bug him.

I also almost introduced myself last year during that big rain delay in September; Dave Winfield was at the park, and just as I got done having him sign a copy of his book, Arte and Bill Stoneman came by to say hello before he left the yard.

Look, if you are milling about the stadium forty minutes after a game that saw your team losing 11-0 going into the 9th, the owner SHOULD by you some swag.

I put a picture of me and Arte as my main MYSPACE picture and than Kelvim Escobar added me as a friend.

Morneo quietly jacked up the price of beer this season. Drafts of domestic swill are now $6.75, the same price as when he bought the team. Bottles of domestic beer now run from $7.25 to $8.00 (deprending on the brand), and a bag of stale peanuts is $5.50 (how the hell can peanuts be stale on Opening Night unless they were left over from last year?).

The Ravens' owner is a very down-to-Earth guy; he plays pool at a Veterans Highway dive and applauds even the most pathetic karaoke singers. Of course, he drives home in the only 100K sports sedan on the parking lot...
