L.A. Times: Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw shuts down the Angels

The Angels had their chances for a comeback in the eighth and ninth innings Sunday, but the Dodgers were able to stay out of reach for a 5-3 victory Sunday evening at Angel Stadium.

The Dodgers won their second Freeway Series of the season by handing the Angels their second consecutive loss. The Dodgers improved their record to 46-24, four wins better than the Boston Red Sox, the next closest team in the majors, and seven wins better than any National League team.

The Angels lost their second consecutive game and remain half a game behind the Rangers in the A.L. West.

Clayton Kershaw (4-5) gave the Dodgers all the pitching support they would need in a winning effort. He pitched seven innings of scoreless ball and gave up four hits, walked four and struck out five. Angels starter John Lackey (2-3) pitched eight innings, but gave up four runs on nine hits and took the loss.

The Dodgers took the early lead, but did their best to let the Angels back in the game.

Protecting a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the ninth, Dodgers closer Jonathan Broxton allowed a single to Bobby Abreu. Torii Hunter then hit a ball to the warning track that bounced off of the heel of center fielder Matt Kemp’s glove, allowing Abreu to score.

Vladimir Guerrero grounded out to Broxton, but Hunter advanced to third on the play, and Juan Rivera’s single scored Hunter to cut the Dodgers’ lead to 5-3.

Did anyone hear Morgan and Phillips talking about "Moneyball" during the early stages of this game? It was funny, in a way. Initially, Morgan praised Figgins' OBP, and I was thinking, "this is progress." Then a Figgins quote was brought up about the Angels' approach, which was described something like, "hitting line drives, running all the time, creating holes, etc." Morgan reacted by saying Figgins "should have written the book on playing offensive baseball." Phillips said that the Dodgers are similar to the Angels. Morgan said, "So, neither the Dodgers or Angels are Moneyball teams, right?" It was like he felt he proved a point. Then the three broadcasters made a poor effort to describe Moneyball, ending with somethink like: They aren't moneyball teams becaause they swing instead of walking, and they don't rely on HRs. Phillips allowed that perhaps the Dodgers will take a walk now and then.

On the ESPN radio broadcast they kept comparing Kershaw to Koufax, not once or twice but throughout the entire broadcast, I mean that is kinda big shoes to expect anyone to follow.

I hope they Kershaw doesn't take until his 26 age season to put up the crazy Koufax seasons as he would then be a free agent.

The Dodgers winning their "second freeway series" I assume refers to some previous series against the Padres, because the Angels & Dodgers split the season series after this game.

Erik, there was an ad promoting the 2nd Dodgers-Angels series as the Dodgers winning two out of three. Obviously, the ad is wrong, but somebody gathering the promo material made a mistake and its repeated because nobody bothered to check.
