LA Times: Nomar Garciaparra has a happy return (RR)

The Dodgers (42-44) are now breathing down the 43-44 D’backs’ necks…

[Nomar] Garciaparra made a triumphant return Friday, to the position he last played regularly four seasons ago, in a 10-7 victory for the Dodgers over the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park that extended their winning streak to four games and put them half a game behind first-place Arizona in the NL West.

Activated from the disabled list on the same day as Andruw Jones, Garciaparra was two for four with two doubles, two runs batted in and a run scored.
...
General Manager Ned Colletti made it no secret that landing a shortstop would be his “primary” mission in the three-plus weeks leading up to the trade deadline—and that to do so he could break up the Dodgers’ previously untouchable core of young players.

“We’re more open-minded to who we may have to move than we’ve been in the past,” he said.
...
Already, the Dodgers have asked the Pittsburgh Pirates about Jack Wilson. But landing Wilson or any other shortstop at this stage probably would cost the Dodgers multiple players.

“It’s not an easy position to fill, especially mid-season, but we’re going to see,” Colletti said.

Colletti is such an idiot.

Nomar and Andruw would be right at home on the Angels, what with their culture of winning and all.

Maybe the Halos can ship Aybar or Izturis to the Dodgers for Kemp...

Of course, Scioscia would just let Kemp rot on the bench like Torre.

Kemp pretty much plays every day now. It's Ethier who lost a lot of playing time when Torre kept running Pierre out to left every day.

Wilson's "power" has disappeared this year (ISO of 52). Just temporary because of the injury? Anyway, it's not clear he'll hit much better than Pierre has and I wouldn't give up very much for him. I'd inquire after Eckstein, Cedeno, and maybe Guzman first. Someone in another thread suggested swinging a deal for CC and Peralta which just might be possible -- though it will be hilarious seeing the Dodgers with an OF of Pierre, Jones and ... Delwyn Young? But it is slim pickings out there for SS. I'd keep driving a hard bargain on the SS front and hope that Hu figures out how to hit a bit or Nomar stays miraculously healthy. But I don't see much chance of getting value in an SS trade.

But it's not like dealing Kemp or Ethier would exactly be a major blow. Even in the longterm, Ethier looks like a less powerful version of Geoff Jenkins (without the sterling defense I assume) or maybe Chad Tracy (with defense). Nice player to have around but not one you (normally) fret about trading away. "Normally" because the Dodgers' alternatives are Pierre and Jones.

Kemp meanwhile is continuing his amazing trick of being a league average hitter despite a BABIP of 378 (not BA on-contact, BABIP). The walks are up a bit but if the power doesn't start arriving soon, we're gonna be looking at something like Jeff Francoeur.

Not really relevant to this particular article, but just something that amused me when looking at Dodgers stats on BBR. I love how Mark Sweeney continues to pinch hit at some point in almost every game even though he really couldn't be hitting any worse.

What kind of GM makes this announcement in the press?

Shows they aren't over-reacting to small sample sizes.

Sweeney's current numbers look pretty much like his 2002 season with the Padres. If you had assumed those numbers meant he was done, you would have been wrong, as he remained a good hitter off the bench for 2003-2007.

Then again he is 38, so maybe this time he is done. This is a situation that calls for scouting-based decision making.

The Dbacks have been awful for a long time. Yet, ironically, despite losing last night, they managed to extend their franchise record for most days in 1st place in the NL west.

That team is more shell-shocked than the German 6th army at Stalingrad

I love that Nomar is back at SS. It's still sort of odd to look back at how it came to happen that Nomar and ARod moved off SS while Jeter stayed there. Crazy.

Why not see if Nomar can handle it in the dayd that Derek Lowe doesn't pitch? Nomar would get a day off out of every five whichi is probably good and if he is at least serviceable you can get a defensive replacement in later. They need more offense from wherever they can get it.

Or you can panic and deal Kemp for 50 cents on the dollar today.

The Angels have a lot of 50-cent pieces....

They sure do. Sarge Jr. is a proven vet. I'm sure the Angels would swallow a good deal of that contract in a trade for Kemp...

So what are the odds that the winner of the NL West has record below .500 this year?
   16. Bob T Posted: July 05, 2008 at 06:24 PM (#2844605)
I think the NL West winner will have a winning record because the unbalanced schedule with all of its intradivisional games in September means SOMEBODY has to win.

The Dodgers and Giants have played just four times. Presumably, the Dodgers will end up with an edge in that series. Arizona has played well within the division.
