(LAT) Manny Ramirez suspended 50 games.

Just Manny being Manny?

Wanting to give the young kids a chance to produce on the Dodgers?  Get A-Rod off the back pages? Or a condemnation of the Red Sox world series victories?

Who will think of the children?

Manny Ramirez has tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs and will be suspended 50 games starting today, The Times has learned.

From Will Carroll:
UPDATE 3: Ramirez’s statement issued through the MLBPA indicates that Ramirez will not appeal his suspension and that he received the banned substance from a doctor. Ramirez was suspended under section 8.G.2 of the Joint Drug Agreement, which is “other.” In his statement, there’s no clear statement that Ramirez ever tested positive. Combined, those two facts point to a non-testable drug, but this is not confirmed. The only other known 8.G.2 suspension was Jordan Schaefer.
   202. Jimmy P Posted: May 07, 2009 at 03:57 PM (#3169091)
ESPN is still calling it a PED, and Crasnick and others are linking and comparing this to A-Rod. Not quite accurate, A-Rod admitted to taking Roids, manny was suspended under the "OTHER" clause.

Does that surprise you? ESPN's not there to report, they're making money and stoking the flames.
   203. Gamingboy Posted: May 07, 2009 at 03:57 PM (#3169092)
MLB Network is covering it. They've broken and done aspecial report with Harold Reynolds, Tom Verducci and whats-his-face.

They just said it is "not a steroid" on MLB network.

Tom Verducci at cnnsi.com:

The source said the substance was not classified as a steroid but was clearly defined as a banned performance enhancer according to the drug agreement between baseball and its players association. Banned substances can only be taken with prior knowledge and medical clearance from baseball's drug-program administrators. Such exceptions are known as Therapeutic Use Exemptions, or TUEs. The suspension is an indication Ramirez did not have a TUE for the substance.

It is clearly Viagra prescribed for his severe erectile dysfunction.

I trust the statement of Scott Boras and now let us pray that Manny at least puts his suspension to use with some good lovin.

Oh and I also want to congratulate levski on the dbacks winning the division.

This certainly casts a pall over the Red Sox championship teams

??? because he tested positive for something that he took THIS YEAR?

No pall if you believe everyone's statements that they admit only what they got caught doing. Did you believe Rodriguez/Pettitte/Roberts on the limited timeline of their admitted use?

i'd take all this seriously if it turns out its steroids but since there's no indication so far that that is the case, i don't get the reflexive OMG TEH STERIODS!1!! THEY ARE ALL DIRTY CHEATERS posts.

but then that's just me. i've been agnostic about the whole steroids issue for quite some time.

Right, 8.G.2 seems to mean "other" not in terms of an"other" drug from what is on the list, but "other" in terms of not involving a failed test, drug conviction, etc.

Section G is titled, "Other Violations"

Sub section two:

2. A Player may be subjected to disciplinary action for just cause by the Commissioner for any Player violation of Section 2 above not referenced in Section 8.A through 8.F above.

Section 2 is the list of prohibited substances, A-F are disciplinary conditions, e.g., failing tests, being arrested for controlled substances.

an update on the ESPN thing, (in case anyone missed my editted post, they are flying so quick)

after saying PED for about an hour, ESPN.com just changed it to "drug policy" but still has the video up of an anchor and Crasnick talking about it being PEDS. I assume there will be a "Sportscenter special" on at 2 pm EST, where all the talking heads will re-regurgitate the same opinions and blend those into "facts" for an hour or 2.

The first sentence of the LA Times story:

Manny Ramirez has tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs and will be suspended 50 games starting today, The Times has learned.

Huh?
   223. bunyon Posted: May 07, 2009 at 04:03 PM (#3169113)
So, maybe he gets a prescription for HGH and doesn't clear it with MLB. Hence, no steroid, but a known PED, and no failed test. In fact, perhaps the prescription, somehow, came to the attention of MLB and led to the suspension.

EDIT: Or not a prescription. But MLB finds out he's had/used HGH somehow, busts him, which allows him to break out the "prescription" which is easy enough to come up with.

But I agree with others, sounds like HGH.

My choice is what I choose to do,

Your choice is who you choose to be,

Am I wrong here?

Not a perfect analogy, but if I find out that an extremely elderly relative of mine had passed away, while I would be immediately shocked by the news, I wouldn't have been surprised either. Same with the Manny news. I feel that there aren't that many players from the past 10-15 years (maybe more) that haven't at least dabbled in it at some point.

It is free. I don't have a subscription, so I went there to check it out. Thus I don't know how quoting a free page on that site is any different than quoting from the LA Times or ESPN or some random blog.

None of those sites have ever threatened this site with a lawsuit.

Touché!

I have just realized that "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters" sounds like a slang term for drugs.

ISn't Salvia legal?

It better be, or else I'm in big trouble....

Actually, I believe the AP made a universal threat to all blogs that quote their work... not that this came from the AP, but still

Well...at least he's moving away from Richard Meltzer's quotes.

I think I'll take Tom Verducci and Will Carroll citing "unnamed sources" about as seriously as I take Selena Roberts citing "unnamed sources".

Back in around 2001 - it was largely due to the similarity in names at the time (Baseball Prospectus vs. Baseball Primer). I've always assumed that the name change at the time of registration was intended to eliminate any future threat of a lawsuit.

"unnamed sources"

I've never liked this term, regardless of how credible they are. The source has a name, the reporter simply won't reveal it. I think it should always be referred to as a source unwilling to be identified. That makes it more clear that the source won't go fully on the record and lets a person judge whether or not that is justified (there are going to be whistle-blower cases where this is necessary, no matter how it comes off).
