(LAT) Manny Ramirez suspended 50 games.

Just Manny being Manny?

Wanting to give the young kids a chance to produce on the Dodgers?  Get A-Rod off the back pages? Or a condemnation of the Red Sox world series victories?

Who will think of the children?

Manny Ramirez has tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs and will be suspended 50 games starting today, The Times has learned.

If MLB isn't allowed to comment, it's easy for the player to have someone leak out a relatively innocuous "excuse" that nobody is in a position to rebut.
Well, sure, all we have at the moment is "if", which is part of why this thread is already at 400 posts.

If #372 is true, MLB is going to look like more of a laughingstock than Manny, I think.

Maybe, but they're right to ban stuff that can be used as a masking agent (hair loss treatments can also fall under this).

This is ripped right out of the NFL PR playbook for handling such crises. In fact, up until 2001, if an NFL player simply claimed that his positive test was due to a tainted supplement from a team, the suspension was removed. They just needed to make the claim, and poof.

Since nobody will read number 400, here it is again: Daulerio over at Deadspin.... only then at the end it was revealed to be another Manny Ramirez.

DAMN YOU DEADSPIN!!!!

I really, really could care less what he took or didn't take.

I am ECSTATIC about the news, however, because I HATE THE DODGERS and they deserve bad things heaped upon them.

Believe it or not, as much as I hate the Dodgers, I don't think he did this on purpose. Manny has never struck me a dumb.

Really? Seems to me the dumb people weren't using a PED over the last 15 years.

It is clearly Viagra prescribed for his severe erectile dysfunction.

A source close to Manny Ramirez said Thursday that the illegal substance for which the Los Angeles Dodgers slugger tested positive was not “an agent customarily used for performance enhancing.”

At least not on the baseball diamond. The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the substance is supposed to boost sex drive. It is not Viagra, but a substance that treats the cause rather providing a temporary boost in sexual performance, the source said.

ZING!

ESPN:

However, two sources told ESPN's T.J. Quinn and Mark Fainaru-Wada that the drug used by Ramirez is HCG -- human chorionic gonadotropin. HCG is a women's fertility drug typically used by steroid users to restart their body's natural testosterone production as they come off a steroid cycle. It is similar to Clomid, the drug Bonds, Giambi and others used as clients of BALCO.

$$ goes to build little league baseball fields in urban L.A.

Also from the HCG Wiki.

The ? subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin is secreted also by some cancers including choriocarcinoma, germ cell tumors, hydatidiform mole formation, teratoma with elements of choriocarcinoma (this is rare), and islet cell tumor. For this reason a positive result in males can be a test for cancer, The normal range for men is between 0-5 IU/ml, although cancer should not automatically be suspected if the level is <30.

I mean, I doubt that's what's happening here, it is just interesting things I didn't know before.

mrsidiom and I went to Alaska for two weeks on our honeymoon. We started our trip a few days after Nicole Simpson was murdered.

I worked in the canneries that summer. It was itinerant labor along the coasts. (I was really good at unloading boats, but not so good anybody ever hired me to work at sea.)

Occasionally, when the OJ subject came up, I'd ask, 'say, what's happening with him anyway?'

People laughed.

/Came up way too often...

Then he contacts baseball and gets a theraputic use waiver, like all the assorted sufferers of ADHD have.

There has been quite the epidemic increase of ADHD in the majors since this out was make available.....something on the order of 400%.

Manny's a different case to the others. Steroids make you stronger, but they don't make you hit .348. Manny's much more of a pure hitter than say McGwire or Sosa.

Please. Buy a clue. Manny has 533 freaking HR, at least 400 without the aid of PED. Also 516 doubles, and a career .279 isolated power.

And all you can say is that steroids don't help you hit .348. Geez.

You may have a problem picking up subtle humor.

Not sure what the treatment would be, but do check that it isn't on MLB's list before taking it.

Something league-wide changed in the early 90s, because home runs increased league-wide in 1993. It wasn't Denver, because AL HRs increased, too. Did everyone start using at once?

Since MLB knew strikes were forthcoming...they game tested "live balls" in 1987.

1993/1994 ta-da!

The dosage of amphetamines to treat ADD are pretty low - not really enough to improve athletic performance.

I don't think so. He was responding to km, whose love for Manny, though indeed humorous, could never be described as subtle.

Yep. km wasn't joking.

Do steroids help? Here are the top 15 active HR leaders from 1992 and 2007. Please discuss. Climate changes, juiced balls, smaller stadiums, changing winds, worse pitching, juiced batters.....oh what oh what could it be?

Seems to me that this is a perfect case of "Kids, kids, you're both right".

This is actually the theory I subscribe to. The extra something that led to the absolutely crazy totals of the late 90's/early 00's was unchecked PED abuse. Drug testing seems to have toned things down, but we're definitely in a new era.

Semi-serious question: which ball was livelier, the 20's/30's ball or the 90's/00's ball?

PEDs make your entire body more athletic, quicker, stronger, less fatigue. PEDs help an athlete do everything better. Still I'm not going to pretend it is some national tragedy.

Last time I checked, I believe the rabbit ball is still the highest scoring era in baseball history. Meaning, Hack Wilsons RBI record is total crap.

Sammy did hit 320 and 328 in back to back years. Then again, he has no more evidence of steroids against him than Albert Pujols does.

That ain't necessarily a good thing. The steroid rumour mill is now ominously circling Pujols and Papi. There will be a landing soon.

It only seems fair that before any test results are made public, a player should be confronted with the evidence and allowed to answer it. After that, and after it's obvious that the drugs were used for performance enhancement, then by all means publicize and suspend. But what's the harm in taking an extra day or three to make sure they get it right? Again, he's not leaving the country.

What makes you think this hasn't been done? Today was not the first that Manny heard of it. It was simply the first time that he has addressed it publicly (sort of).

It would be nice if he could somehow clear his name of being a "roider", but still maintain his medical privacy.

Wow, what he do to deserve this devotion. Bonds never tested positive but is continually raked over the coals and thrown under the bus. Manny tests positive, says he's guilty and not appealing and we have a pity party. PT Barnum was totally right on. There's a fool born every minute and they all become baseball fans or writers.

Manny did not test positive for steroids.

but I still feel that they were clean.

There are no clean players in baseball (other then Griffey of course). It's like crying and ties. Why can't we all accept than and just move on.
