Leyland: ‘With the year we’ve had, I stink,’ but I ain’t the Lone Ranger

Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear… The Marlboro Man rides again!

“I’m going to tell you the facts: I stink,” he said. “With the year we’ve had, I stink. But I can tell you one thing: I ain’t the Lone Ranger.”

“Everybody’d better step it up,” Leyland said. “They’d better do what they need to do this winter. They’d better come to spring training in shape, because there’s only two jobs on the pitching staff right now, other than Bonderman. That’s it.

“I don’t want to hear any whining. I’m talking about the bullpen, too. There’s no jobs. ... We’ve been pretty nice around here long enough. Sooner or later, you’ve got to do the job.”

..."I’m tired of worrying about guys being sensitive,” Leyland said. “The facts are the facts, boys: We stunk. I stunk. We stunk. I don’t want to hear any pouting, any whispering in the clubhouse. That’s over with. I can tell you that right now.

“Step up to the plate and show you’re one of the best. You do that, you’re going to pitch, you’re going to play.”

After the Tigers lost the Worst World Series Ever, I predicted Detroit wouldn't get another shot at a World Championship for another decade or more.

Lookin' like a good prediction now. Dammit.

It's true he's not the Lone Ranger.

After all, the Lone Ranger had a trusty Indian companion beside him. Leyland has 25 Indians 7.5 games ahead of him.

I don't mind Leyland getting all riled up but saying that Bonderman and Galarraga are the only two pitching spots secured is a bit much. I don't think Verlander is going to Toledo im April.

I don't think that's what he meant:

there’s only two jobs on the pitching staff right now, other than Bonderman.

that sounds like he was saying "there are two jobs [Verlander and Galarraga], oh, and Bonderman also, so that's three"

The Tigers are 16-33 since Todd Jones was first placed on the disabled list. "You found out the value of a closer," Leyland said.

Yes, if they'd had Jones, they might've been 19-30 in that stretch.

You don't mull the task of the old Lone Ranger, and you don't mess around with Jim.

I bet Verlander gets traded in a Jair Jurgens kind of deal or something.

We stunk.

You pull the mask off of no lone ranger, and you don't mess around with Jim.
