Liriano’s Change

Moreover, I’m going to quibble with O’Leary’s assertion that the slider is a harder pitch on the elbow. Studies have shown that, thrown properly, the “cost” of a slider is not significantly higher than a fastball. (You can check for yourself at this link. I’m sure you’ll recognize a couple of the names involved, attesting to the quality of the study.) The big caveat is “thrown properly,” which allows any pitch to turn into a potential injury, not to mention anything of in-game or seasonal fatigue issues.

Mike, what's your take on Chris O'Leary? Having read some of his stuff and his background, I'm not at all convinced he knows what he's talking about beyond a very rudimentary level. i certainly place a lot more stock in what Eisenberg says than what O'Leary says.

I honestly don't know - some of what he says makes sense, some seems to be out of LF (check out his entry on Lincecum). If CBW is around, maybe he can comment.

I'll navigate carefully here...

Talked to him on the phone. Very nice guy with some good ideas. Agree on some ideas, disagree on some others. Don't think he'd admit it, but he's started to come around on some of the ideas on our side of the mechanics discussions, much like I've learned some from his. Seems very concerned w/ injury prevention and being safer.

I'll leave it there.

I'm not sure I trust O'Leary, but I could say the same about Carroll.

Speaking as a biomechanist, I find O'Leary's ideas on injury prevention to be sound from a mechanical/anatomical perspective.

For those who didn't click (it's just an abstract, very little reading required), the conclusion states that the sample size for the slider was too small to draw any conclusions.
