LoHud Yankees Blog: The ethics of cheering

Man, what a shot. Yankees win, the Yankees win. Everybody goes home happy.

But did that moment give you pause, if only for a split second? Be honest. I’d be curious to hear what you think because I sure can’t come up with an answer.

No.

Gotta agree with Larry.

I guess on some levels my perception of professional athletes (other than, to an extent, my countryman Mariano) is very different from someone who sees them every day and up close.

To me, professional athletes are like rock stars or beautiful actresses in that they are simply not in my world, and I don't judge them by my standards (i.e., I don't care how many kids Mick Jagger has sired. He's Mick Jagger. And Cate Blanchett may not actually be Galadriel, but as far as I'm concerned, her feet never quite touch the ground).

If Pete Abraham wants to measure Alex Rodriguez by his $75K a year standards (or $100K a year standards or whatever), his Springsteen obsession and his tailgating Patriots fandom, be my guest, but I couldn't care less.

Abraham just has an obsession with A-Rod. Was this ever asked when Pettitte pitched a good game last year or this year?

For this HR, it didn't even enter my mind until I read this ####.

Sure, I'd cheer for Rodriguez.

"B**CH T*TS!!!" is a cheer, right?

Nope.

I would be more annoyed with the "THE YANKEES WIN. THE YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANKESS WIN" cheer that Sterling does after every Yankees win.

Doesn't that get tiring after awhile?

Oh yeah.

Wouldn't you worry more about the fact that over 20 ballplayers are on target for 40+ HR seasons...including fuggin' Branded Inge? What is the clean reasoning behind this?

If you just swallow the sweet "Live Ball II" elixir...you don't worry about such did he/didn't he nonsense.

Merely glorious speed bumps on the road to freedom from the Bill Meltons of the world.

I'more worried about the guy who is on a 0 HR pace, myself.

Don't worry. I'm sure Figgins will turn it around.

I had the same thought when I read the entry, and no, of course not. The first example that came to mind was the gem Pettitte pitched on July 20, 8 IP, 1 ER, 9 K, 4 hits and 0 BB, and Abraham had nothing but praise for his performance.

That's an outright lie. You should be ashamed.

Because what that horse's ass actually bleats is "THHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA YANKEES WIN."

I really thought this was going to be about how A-Rod was getting the shitt booed out of him until that HR, after which everyone loved him.

No.

Larry's a good guy and all, but it seems 99% of his baseball opinions are Yankee-fan-convienent baseball opinions.

This was probably the most surprising thing I learned when I lived in Boston that terrible year. There are a number of GGCs who root for this combo. I'm not sure how this happened.

It happpens everywhere, because (a) not everyone who lives in a city is from that city to begin with, and there's no moral obligation to transfer your allegiances every time you move; and (b) some teams that you've loved over the years can wind up being hijacked by such loathsome people that it makes rooting for them almost impossible. Right here in the DC-Baltimore area you've got two prime examples of that, but they're not the only ones.

What struck me as most strange about this was that Pete Abe seems to answer the question of whether I should have doubts himself with this:

I’m pretty sure that every time somebody like [Rodney] Harrison, or A-Rod or Manny Ramirez gets caught, there are 50 other athletes who are glad it wasn’t them.

So why should I feel bad about A-Rod's homer? Maybe Breslow is/was on the juice. Or Morneau, without whom the Yankees would have won in regulation. If you really believe (and I'm not sure I do, but I am sure that Abraham does) that a huge number of players are using PEDs, I don't see the purpose of getting yourself worked up about one particular player, except that he's A-Rod and getting worked up about him is what people do.

My dad grew up liking both. The Pats didn't exist until he was 23. That and I live in CT, which is disputed territory. But I believe that Boston get's it share of Giants games on FOX. As you attested to, they have a fanbase up there.

My favorite Pats teams were the ones from the late 70s with Grogan, Hawg Hannah, Sam Bam Cunningham, et al. But then the Giants started getting relevant again soon after that era and I think my dad jumped back on their bandwagon.

There are a ton of Bostonian/New Englanders over the age of 60 who are NFL Giants fans. Simple enough, that was the closest team when they were growing up.

My dad grew up a Sox/Dolphins fan in CT because he hated the Pats (and they perpetually stunk), didn't care to root for a NY team, and one of the local radio stations for some reason carried all the 'Fins games, so that's what he got.
