Lou keeps it in perspective :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: Chris De Luca

‘So much riding in August?’’ Piniella said during his pregame chat with reporters. ‘‘I don’t know. I think you are going to have a hell of a lot more riding [on the games] in the middle of September than you are now—if we play the way we expect to play.’‘
...
‘‘It’s exciting,’’ Piniella said, ‘‘but you have to keep your perspective. You can’t get carried away.’‘

What do the hostages think?

I hadn't realized that September games count more heavily in the standings than August games.

As a Cubs fan, I desperately hope that the games in mid-September DON'T matter. Because I hope we'll have a huge lead, of course.

That'd be nice, huh? And it's theoretically possible to have the division wrapped up by mid-September, I guess, since the Brewers and Cards don't play each other till the last week of the season; the Cubs run the table through September 15 and the Cards and Brewers lose 'em all, that'd wrap things up.

I'm not exactly holding my breath over here.

Let's see--if that scenario were to play out, the Cubs would lead the Cards by 21 with 13 to play (15 for the Cards), and the Brewers by 20 (15 to play for the Brewers). Hell--let's do it.
