(Luis) Castillo Set to Return, but to a Crowded Spot (RR)

Luis Castillo, who is recovering from a strained hip flexor, is eligible to come off the disabled list on Thursday. But in his absence, Damion Easley and Argenis Reyes have held down the fort. Easley is batting .292 and providing solid defense. Reyes is 5 for 18 in nine games since being called up from Class AAA New Orleans.

“I think we’re all a little worried about dealing with that right now,” Manuel said. “When the time comes, we’ll make a decision. But we’re playing very well at that position.”

Whether Castillo can string together consecutive games when he returns is a question because he has struggled with hip and knee injuries all season. Easley has not been a regular starter in at least four years, but he is Manuel’s primary alternative.

“We just have to communicate about how he feels and what it takes to get him back out here,” Manuel said of Easley, before adding that day games after night games would require special attention.

Argenis Reyes isn’t going to hit much but he does play the best defense. Easley has the most pop and his defense but he doesn’t get on base much nor does he play very good defense. Castillo gets on base and can run the bases pretty well but offers little if any power and his defense has been bad.

I’d keep playing Easley until the Met hot streak ends.

I know Easley has been hot and I wouldn't want to mess with a winning formula but his ZR is worse than Castillo's and I think he'd get exposed if he played everyday.

BTW, here are Pelfrey's numbers in his last three starts:

22 IP, 0.41 era, .77 whip, 16/2 k/bb, 15 h.

That's dominance.

And there's always Ruben Gotay, once heralded prospect just needing a chip and a chair

Pelfrey's been good, excellent in fact. He's mixing 4seamers and 2seamers really nicely

The Twins picked the wrong pitcher.

I don't think Pelfrey was ever on the table.

And there's always Ruben Gotay, once heralded prospect just needing a chip and a chair

Gotay can hit righties. Even this year, when he has barely played, he has a respectable .745 OPS against them. Unfortunately for him, he got picked up by the Braves who have Johnson. I still think Gotay could be a starter somewhere if given a chance.

I was at the game last night, and there was much Pelfrey-love. They booed Joe Smith when he entered for not being Mike Pelfrey.

It's easy to forget that Luis was doing well OBP-wise because he's otherwise so underwhelming in every way, it seems. And kind of sickly, reminiscent of Beth in Little Women or something.

The over-crowding problem @ 2B will be resolved as soon as they start playing Castillo. He can't go more than a week without going on the DL again.

Mostly he's keeping the ball down against people that can hit.

Maybe that's why he threw a lot of high fastballs against the Dbacks; they can't hit

Easley can also play the outfield. For a team that is playing Fernando Tatis and Nick Evans in the outfield corners (granted, Tatis is about as hot as Easley right now), I think they can find at-bats for Easley out there.

Easley has poor range and hands, but he turns the double play very well.

Rotoworld:

According to the New York Daily News, when asked whether Luis Castillo (hip) would be coming off the disabled list immediately after the All-Star break, a Mets officially replied, "What for?"

I think the Mets are playing so well because Castillo is not around. His fragility reminded all of the other Mets of the frailty of the human condition. Now that he is gone, the team has remembered that they are strong and vibrant professional athletes and have played as such.

Why cause he bores a lot of 8th and 9th graders.
