Maese: Is Angelos playing too small a role?

Guess so. I checked the “Hairspray 2: White Lipstick” credits. Nothing.

1. To players, Angelos has been little more than a signature on a paycheck.

2. They wish he were much more.

This is going to sound like heresy in some corners of the Orioles kingdom, but could it be possible Angelos plays too small a role in his empire?

No one is suggesting we revisit the days when important baseball decisions were made by people who learned the game from the backs of baseball cards. But there has been a push to get Angelos more involved with the players. One game into the season, in fact, it’s already a successful movement.

Angelos accompanied Vice President Joe Biden on a tour of the ballpark Monday afternoon. They stopped in the team’s clubhouse and hung around for about a half-hour. Biden did most of the talking and Angelos most of the observing, according to those who were there.

“He cares about this organization, and he cares about the guys,” second baseman Brian Roberts said. “He just doesn’t want to be one of the owners who’s here all the time.”

But those who wear the uniform are hoping for a change. Dave Trembley and Andy MacPhail have been urging the Orioles owner to show his face more often, to get rid of the mysterious man-behind-the-curtain mystique.

This looks like a really stupid article, so I'll hijack this thread.

Why the hell hasn't Baseball-Reference updated?

Sure, if Angelos could reinvent himself into an owner like Jack Kent Cooke, it would make Orioles baseball a more enjoyable experience for everyone from the players down to the gossip columnists. But I'm afraid that Redskins fans would have first dibs on someone like that.

Why the hell hasn't Baseball-Reference updated?

I'm not sure how he gets his stat database updated, but when Sean redesigned the site, something must have become broken with that code.

I'm sure he'll have it fixed soon enough.

Biden did most of the talking

No kidding?

Is Angelos playing any role whatsoever? Then it's not small enough.

If Maese had written this three or four years ago, I would've sworn I had somehow stumbled into an alternate universe.

1. Andy MacPhail takes control of the club, evaluates the talent and the economic climate, and starts throwing nickels around like manhole covers, nontendering modestly overpaid players like Daniel Cabrera and signing useful pieces like Ty Wigginton for next to nothing.
2. Players who have personal relationships with the owner (Roberts and Mora) are in the tiny minority. So are players who get signed to contract extensions that are too long and too expensive (Roberts and Mora).
3. Many players say they want to develop personal relationships with the owner.

What a shocking, shocking development.

The only club president who plays too small a role is David Samson.
