Mariner exec Shaffer taking a look at Griffey

Shaffer: When you’re having Griffey more than once.

There may be more to the Mariners interest in Ken Griffey Jr. than Seattle management has been willing to let on

Reports out of New York say that Duane Shaffer, in his first season as a special assistant to Seattle general manager Bill Bavasi, was in Shea Stadium Sunday to have a look at Griffey.

The Mariners need two things - someone to get the fans’ interest revved up after a horrid start to the season and someone to provide some power to a lineup devoid of many run-producers.

What, you're saying that the lack of production from DH & RF is suddenly a problem? I thought Vidro & Wilkerson (& the amazing Willie Bloomquist) would've taken care of that! I am SHOCKED, I tell you!

I'd like to think that Miguel Cairo getting a start @ 1B this weekend was in tribute to Joe Torre.

Dear God I hope they take him soon. Dusty insists on hitting him 3rd.

The really weird thing is, people seemed shocked out here that the Mariners can't score runs.

Just watch: Bavasi will send someone like Triunfel to Cincinnati for the corpse of Griffey. Hopefully that will lead to his subsequent firing.

No kidding. People looked at me funny when I told them I thought Vidro was not a good DH.

Clement was called up to provide some badly needed offense, but has yet to produce. He is young and talented, so there is really no reason to think that this is anything else but a slow start. The question is, however, how do the M's effectively give AB's to a player who, for the short term, will make the team worse? Do they just say screw it and let Clement learn to play 1B for rest of the season? Demote Vidro? I can't think of another player on this roster who looks like he can help the team with some more AB's.

Not worry about the short term too much, since they are not likely to be good enough to compete this year anyway...and some of the chance they are is due to the possibility Clement will be a significant upgrade this year anyway.
