Mariners sign Russ Branyan

Apparently Richie Sexson did not deter the Mariners from going with another ex-Indians prospect with great power and eye-popping strikeout totals.

The Mariners first free agent signing is third baseman/hitter Russell Branyan.

“Russell gives us a veteran left-handed bat with power and can be used as a first baseman, third baseman or designated hitter,” said Zduriencik. “One of our off-season goals is to add some left-handed power to our club. The addition of Russell accomplished some of that.”...

He has 797 strikeouts in 2000 career major league at bats, meaning he strikes at least once in every three at-bats. He also has 133 home runs. He has a career OPS of .813.

I would have gone with 4/10 instead of 1/3 but that's just me.

So would Bavasi.

Nice move by the Mariners. I was hoping the Brewers would bring him back as a platoon partner for Bill Hall, or, if they get a full-time 3rd baseman, as a backup for 1st, 3rd, and the OF corners. Oh well, good luck to him in Seattle.

From spending so many years as the poor man's Richie Sexson, Russ Branyan is finally poised to supplant and surpass the real Richie Sexson.

This will be Branyan's 8th major league team played for...still only 33 years old.
