Mariotti: Garland deal makes no sense

“And you may ask yourself
How do I work this?”

For that reason, you never, ever trade Jon Garland to the Angels for a 33-year-old, lame-duck shortstop. Yes, I realize Orlando Cabrera was a Gold Glover who hit a career-high .301 last season and had a 63-game on-base streak the year before. Yes, I know he won a World Series ring in Boston and has an association with Ozzie Guillen dating to their Montreal days. And yes, I know Garland pitched like a disillusioned soul during the second half and reeked like fireweed. But Cabrera is getting old—older than we think if his I.D. is fake—and there’s a chance he’ll decline in the final season of his contract. If you’re relinquishing a rubber-armed asset like Garland, who just turned 28 and won 18 games in consecutive seasons, you don’t settle for one veteran regular in return. You should be receiving a package.

I can't decide if Glenn Beck-ish comments like these are fake.

I can't decide if Mariotti is stupid enough to believe or if he thinks his readers are.

I can't believe that I'm actually thinking about how heated the Mariotti / Plaschke tete-a-tetes on Around The Horn might become because of this.

I think Mariotti's right (EUREKA!) about this being a poor trade for the Sox, but he's right for the wrong reasons. The problem isn't that the Sox didn't "get a package of regulars" for Garland (which would be a ridiculous expectation)--it's the particular regular they got for him.

Mariotti is a moron.

Did Mariodiot just suggest that Orlando Cabrera is an illegal alien? wow.

If you're referring to the fake I.D. part, I think he was implying that Cabrera lied about his age like a lot of players from the Dominican Republic. (Not to say that only DR players do it, but that's who it is mostly associated with.)

Just to note: Cabrera was born in Columbia.

What part of the plan does picking up Uribe's option cover?

So Marrioti must have missed the age corrections of a few years ago that happened because the Department of Homeland Security cracked down on the accuracy of visas.
