Marlins Ballpark Agreement Reached

The deal calls for the county and city to contribute $360 million mainly in tourist taxes and a $50 million general obligation bond Miami-Dade voters approved in 2004 to renovate the Orange Bowl, but which will instead be moved to the ballpark project. The Marlins are to contribute $155 million…

The Marlins hope to break ground by year’s end with the stadium opening by April 2011, when the team would be renamed the Miami Marlins.

To keep with recent tradition, the new stadium will be built with 37,000 empty seats.

I imagine the infrastructure is A-Ok because it's on the site of the Orange Bowl. Is the cost of demolishing the Orange Bowl included?

I still like Miami Marlins of South Florida better.

I never thought it would actually get done.

If global warming trends continue, it will soon be "in the ocean".

The county/city should have made the Marlins sign a contract agreeing to a minimum payroll of $60-70 million.

It will also be equipped with pontoons, for it's future status as the world's first floating Major League Ballfield.

Maybe now the Marlins can finally field a competitive team and win that long elusive championship.

Those who opposed the Orange Bowl site had cited the lack of public transportation and difficulty getting there (some bridges or bottlenecks are involved). My first thought was "man, this may work for 6-7 Hurricanes games a year, but 81 nights of baseball may make things rough." My second thought was "well, this is the Marlins, so I suppose everyone interested in going to a game can meet at a Winn-Dixie parking lot and carpool in a couple of vans."

Thank you, Craig. That's what I was hinting at with my infrastructure comment, but I wasn't sure I was remembering correctly.
