MASN: Kubatko: Guthrie headed back here?

You Fascists Are Bound to Lose!

Pitching coach Rick Kranitz has Jeremy Guthrie scheduled to pitch on Sunday, which might be a neat trick, considering that the staff ace has accompanied Team USA to Los Angeles.

The Orioles would like to get Guthrie back in a routine here and make sure he’s built up enough innings for his Opening Day start. Guthrie had another rough outing last night in the World Baseball Classic and might not be used again in the tournament.

Guthrie allowed six runs (two earned) and seven hits in 1 2/3 innings against Venezuela. He kept the ball down, but gave up some loud doubles.

“I texted him last night,” said Kranitz, who attended the game in Miami. “I just let him know that I thought it was time for him to come back and get in a regular turn here. I know he went to L.A. I’ll call him on my way back from Viera, but I have tentatively penciled him in to pitch on the 22nd. I don’t think they really need any more starters, so in my mind, there’s no need for him to be there. He needs to be here and he needs to pitch, and that would work out perfectly for scheduling purposes and for him, too.”

Given how well "Seeding Game Guthrie" has been doing, I say it can only help Team USA to ditch him.

Well he hasn't exactly earned it, but the Orioles should let Guthrie hang out in the bullpen and watch the semis (and maybe finals) as part of the team.

He just pitched yesterday, so he can't pitch again until Monday so he's not really missing much back in Ft Lauderdale.

So Guthrie's response to the text message went something like this?

I put "//*THIS CODE KILLS FASCISTS" as a comment in my generic MVS JCL stub. My manager didn't understand.

Somehow the O's rotation is shaping up to be even worse than expected. Guthrie's been terrible (he's probably due for a step back after 2 years of overachievement and shoulder trouble at the end of '08), Uehara and Hill are battling injuries and behind schedule, and everybody else has pitched about how you'd expect. They're in serious danger of opening the season with Adam Eaton as #2 starter.

Trembley and Kranitz must be sh*tting bricks at the prospect of going north with this bunch. I'll give the team credit though - I've seen no mention of waffling on the 'we won't rush the kids' stance despite the probability of impending disaster.

Or just having flashbacks of last year.

This rotation is going to be horrible, but I don't think it will be much worse than last year, where, on average, starters lasted 5.5 innings and allowed 3.5 runs. It would be nice if just one of the turds they're throwing against the wall would stick.

Good thing Matt Wieters will arrive in May or June to provide some bright spots. I hope...

Oh right: Matt Wieters is the best pitcher in the Orioles Rotation, and he is neither in the rotation, nor a pitcher.

Actually, wasn't he a pretty good closer in college?

Came for the obvious "Coming Into Los Angeles" jokes.

Leaving bitterly, bitterly disappointed.

All right, the exaggerations have now gone too far.

Markakis is the best pitcher in the Orioles rotation...

More seriously, Guthrie had a slow start last year too, and I just hope the 5-8 scrubs Baltimore's gonna run through can keep the team ERA below 6 before kids start showing up mid-year.

"It would be nice if just one of the turds they're throwing against the wall would stick."

The new advertising slogan for Camden Yards-

"Come see the Wall of Turds".
