Mass Live: Interview: Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News

This is the MVP story that never ends, yes it goes on and on my friends…

Grant:...I’ve long known about the passion of Red Sox fans, but feel I’ve got a much clearer understanding at this point. Not saying that’s good or bad. But I do have a better understanding and appreciation of it. There were a couple of things, however, that bothered me. Most of it stemmed from the WEEI interview. The station called me and asked me if I’d jump on for a couple of minutes with their hosts. I started to try and explain that there was no anti-Red Sox bias, evidenced by my vote of Youkilis, and that obviously my opinion was way out of line with those of my colleagues. The hosts cut me off to start ripping me halfway through my explanation and things deteriorated from there. Accepting culpability, I guess, would not have made good radio.

I later heard the hosts question Terry Francona about my integrity and heard Tito disagree with my vote but suggest that I am a conscientious reporter. What disappoints me most was that on a day when the whole thing should have been about Pedroia winning, there was this whole mini-furor over a vote that ultimately didn’t have any impact on the outcome. I called Tito to say I’m sorry he had to answer questions about me. I’ve sent Dustin an email to also apologize if this “incident” took any shine off a very special day for him. That’s my sole regret in this whole process.

Do I wish folks could disagree without resorting to name-calling? You bet. But what reaffirmed my faith in the general goodness of fans was that almost every time I sent a response to somebody, I got back a note that said while they disagreed with me, they appreciated my responding. Let’s move on to something a little more pleasant, shall we?

This fellow really shouldn't be apologizing to anyone for anything.

Just one more reason to despise Sox fans in general.

I feel for both sides in this. On one hand, people should leave the guy alone because Pedroia won. On the other hand, we rip sportswriters all the time for stupid votes, and not putting Pedroia on the ballot IS stupid. Sportswriters should be getting called on their BS more often. Either Grant's knowledge of the game is incredibly poor, or he just doesn't take the ballot seriously enough to have a vote.

As a Rangers fan, I do have a lot of bias for Evan Grant. He is a wonderful beat writer. Plenty of people have called out Grant on his ballot, and Grant responded in kind. He politely said that, in retrospect, leaving Pedroia off of the ballot was a mistake due to the fact that he overanalyzed the last few players to make his ballot. Given this statement on his Rangers blog, I do not think that Grant should have had to appear in any media in the Boston area; it was out there for all to read or quote. Having experienced the name calling for simply wearing a Rangers cap to Fenway, I can only imagine what the emails must have said. Despite this, Grant went on the radio and was subjected to irrational anger. I think this speaks volumes about Grant that he later apologized to Francona and Pedroia for his ballot taking away from this moment for Pedroia, his teammates, and Red Sox fans. Grant was called out, and later apologized. I don't think you can ask more of a beat writer. Writers get ripped all the time around here, and I can't think of one who has gone to such lengths to atone for a wrong.

I had Pedroia tenth in the AL in WAR (Mauer, Lee, Sizemore, Halladay, Lester, Rodriguez, Hamilton, Youkilis, Matsuzaka), and there were three players (Roberts, Markakis and Morneau) within a run of him. Leaving him off the ballot was perfectly defensible.

And Grant could have just made his decision by writing down the top ten in Pancake Flops or some other stat, too.

Grant cast his ballot, realized he made a mistake after the fact and apologized for it. As a Sox fan I have no problem with him. I wouldn't be so forgiving if his non-vote cost Pedroia the award but it didn't so move along. The radio idiots he talked to appeal to the lowest common denominator as a matter of course and are completely unlistenable. In contrast, this particular interview seemed more reasonable. It asked him about the vote, let him have his say, then moved on to Red Sox/Rangers related talking points (getting his insight on Saltalamacchia and Teixeira notably).
