My reaction as well. This kind of navel gazing is why everyone outside of New York hates New York.
I've seen players tip their caps to fans who were booing them, it's meant to be a sarcastic gesture.
His immediate reaction after hitting Wright was, "oh crap what did I do".
The fans were booing him for the most part because he hit Wright, but I'm not sure his hat tip had anything to do with Wright- I don't think Cain was thinking about having hit Wright when he tipped his cap... (or at least I hope not)
Yep, we should all be taking instruction on courtesy and class from someone who writes this.
Being upset about hitting someone in the head and mocking a stadium filled with sullen, booing fans are completely different things.
There's no contradiction in Cain's actions.
I guess it could be. Seems unlikely, though. I guess the lesson is that it's silly to speculate about body language and such...
It meant "I didn't mean to hit him, but I also don't need a bunch of ####### new york pieces of #### to boo me for it".
I guess that it amounts to "Screw you guys, full stop." Getting booed non-stop for several innings tends to build up some resentment in the boo-ee, regardless of the boo-er's motivation. He may have picked the habit up from Bonds, who relished the boos of opposing fans. If Cain were still thinking about Wright at that point, he probably wouldn't have pitched that well after the obvious mistake.
