Mets shortstop Jose Reyes, trainer Ray Ramirez involved in car accident with firetruck

Seriously, you can’t make this stuff up.

Injured shortstop Jose Reyes and Mets trainer Ray Ramirez were rear-ended by a firetruck on the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge sometime Monday while driving to the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan for a check-up visit, Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz said.

No one was injured in the accident, Horowitz said.

The Mets said nothing about the accident until starting pitcher Tim Redding unknowingly spilled the beans after Monday’s 6-4 win over St. Louis.

“I got here about 10 after 4 and a lot of things were going on,” Redding said. “Apparently a lot of things were going on all over the city. Our shortstop and our trainer, who’s been working his butt off to keep us on the field, got into an accident. Carlos was getting an MRI and being placed on the DL. And people were being moved, brought up and sent all over the place. So it was a whirlwind day.”

Robert F. Kennedy Bridge? Man, I still can't get used to that name. I just liked the old name.
It's a relief that no one got hurt. It would terrible if something happened to Reyes (e.g. the way Sanchez got hurt).

"What's the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge?"

The move to rename the Throgs Neck Bridge...the Rosey Grier Brokenthumb Bridge failed though.

It'll be an easy decade at least before any of the actual population start calling it the John F. Kennedy Bridge. Probably more like two decades or two generations.

How long 'til they're calling it the Ethel Kennedy Bridge?

The Mets should have used a live chicken in their rituals before the season instead of a bucket of KFC.

Reyes in a car accident. With the trainer. With a firetruck. On the way to the hospital. I think this is a metaphor for something.

Of course they did. Why not?

"What's the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge?"

it was called the Triboro Bridge until last year.

I happened to catch the last half of a show* on one of the HBOs about the Dodgers/Walter O'Malley. Robert Moses is portrayed as the villain, O'Malley as a guy doing what he had to do for the most part. The Hitler, Stalin and O'Malley joke got a play. Robert Caro was interviewed throughout, mostly giving background to the whole Flushing Meadow vs. Terminus of the LIRR debate.

*I don't know if it was an old one or a new one.

EDIT: And while I wish every sort of perdition on the Mets winning percentage, I do not wish that their players or trainers get hurt. I'm glad Reyes and Ramirez are okay.
