Miami Herald: County approves new Marlins baseball stadium financing

At 1:10 a.m. Wednesday, Miami-Dade County commissioners cast the final vote on a set of last-minute changes that cleared the way for the sale of more than $300 million in bonds to pay for construction of a new baseball stadium in Little Havana.

Barring any new surprises, the early morning vote sets the stage for construction of the park, and ends the decade-long quest to build a professional baseball stadium in Miami.

The bond sale agreement is set to be signed at 1 p.m., and Florida Marlins officials said work would begin on site Wednesday, as well.

Well. Okay.

I wish every public policy battle I lost resulted in my baseball team getting a new stadium. Would that they'd all be so easy to swallow.

But fine. We're playing that game. Loria makes out like a bandit. Fine. It's happening.

But we've got a stadium now. We'll have the Miami Marlins. Alright, good. Let's do this thing.

FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDOM!

To fill the gap, Florida Marlins President David Samson appeared before county commissioners and said the ballclub will pick up the $6.2 million difference. He pledged that the project will not be scaled back at all.

''My proposal is no change . . . other than the county's contribution is going down by $6 million,'' said Samson.

But that change triggered questions over how the $6.2 million would be covered by the Marlins -- with several commissioners asking if the ballclub would value-engineer elements out of the stadium rather invest $6.2 million into the ballpark.

Samson responded each time with a firm no, asserting that the ballpark will be built as planned.
Sure, I believe that.

I can't wait until Opening Day arrives and there's Samson explaining that a visitor's dugout would have cost $6.2 million, so the Mets can just buy some tickets to sit like anyone else.

I think the easiest way to value-engineer it would be to make the stadium Samson-sized.

I must've missed something somewhere along the line... why is the name change contingent on the new stadium's completion (very last line of the AP story)? Or is it just a PR tie-in?

Perha[s the Nats can finally win a game there once the new park opens.

I think the name change was part of the original financing deal.

We'll have the Miami Marlins.

The Arlington Rangers, Minneapolis Twins, St. Petersburg Rays, Denver Rockies and Phoenix Diamondbacks say hi.
