Miami Herald: Cuban baseball player defects

“No, I’ll make a comment. The evil empire White Sox? Marlins? Rays? extends their tentacles even into Latin America”

Cuban baseball’s brightest star, Dayán Viciedo, has escaped from Cuba and is now in Miami, following the footsteps of talented island colleagues who have found their way into the major leagues.

Viciedo, a 19-year-old third baseman, is considered as big a star in Cuba as Omár Linares, the most well-rounded player to emerge from the Cuban leagues since 1959 and a player highly coveted by major league scouts during the 1980s.

‘’At first I didn’t like to be compared to Linares because he is almost a legend,’’ Viciedo said. ``Later, I felt proud. As a third baseman I have two idols: Linares from the Cuban National Series and Alex Rodriguez from the major leagues.’’

...Viciedo said that during the last year his mind has been on his plans to defect from Cuba.

‘’There is still very good baseball in Cuba, and there are several youths with promise and a lot of talent that are moving up,’’ he said. ``But in general the level has dropped . . . the decline has been abysmal.’’

The question here is whether he will get residency in another Lat Am country (so he's a FA) or whether he will go dry-foot and get U.S. residency, in which case he'll go into the draft.

#2,
BA's article says that his agent is aiming for American residency and is trying to claim that he was in the US in May and thus was draft-eligible and went undrafted and should now be a free agent.
It is apparently unlikely that MLB will buy that and he will probably have to wait til next year's draft.

Standing 6-2 and weighing 202 pounds, Viciedo is known as a powerful batter and a versatile defender, capable of playing shortstop, third base and outfield, and he even can pitch. His fastball has been clocked at more than 90 mph, but he said his pitching days are over.

BA's article gives a much different take on his abilities. BA's coverage compares him more to Kendry Morales as a talented, young Cuban slugger whose body is in rapid early decline and will be a good hitter limited by his lack of ability to anything but DH and maybe 1b.

Another guy BA quoted said his offensive potential was as good or better than that of Giant's teenage mega-prospect Angel Villalona but that his body was going to look like Livan's

Indeed. My initial assumption upon reading the headline was that "defects" was being used as a noun, & we'd have an, oh, Ariel Prieto sighting ...

Especially if you consider his late arrival, you've gotta consider El Duque to be the gold standard. He's certainly one of the top postseason pitchers in history.

The guy who started the first game of every post-season series for the 2005 Champs wasn't too bad.

Senor Viciedo,

Los Royals de Ciudad Kansas es equipo supremo en Liga Americano de Béisbol. Todos los jugadores de béisbol supremos consiguen una prima de $70.000. ¡Firme el contrato!

Wait, i'm not very good at this negotiating thing, am I?

There are pictures on Google image. Not sure offhand how old they are, but he doesn't look too big to handle third in them.

I've got him as good for 2 years plus this year so far.

And at ages 33, 34, and 36 for those three seasons. How good would El Duque and Contreras have looked if we could have seen them in MLB while they were still in their 20s?

Indeed. North Carolina has just as good of a track record with pro ball players as Cuba. Cuba = overrated

In other words, Cuba couldn't beat Oregon State.
