MiamiHerald.com: Marlins’ Peace Efforts Failed

Barry Jackson dishes the dirt on Girardi, and some of the reasons he was fired.

Among the examples: Girardi sometimes answered his cellphone when he was meeting with GM Larry Beinfest and started a conversation with the caller, prompting Beinfest to walk out. Other times, Loria or a team executive would approach Girardi in the clubhouse, ready to start a conversation, and Girardi would keep walking.

Obviously, the Marlins spin machine is leaking this material to justify their firing of Girardi. But that doesn’t mean it’s false. I will be fascinated to see how Girardi does in his next appointment, but he sure wore out his welcome fast.

Beinfest said Jeremy Hermida, who was a disappointment, ''probably will be given every opportunity'' to earn the right field job, ``but it won't be without competition.''

Would that be Cody Ross or Jeremy Borchard?
I am amazed at how disappointed the Marlins were with Hermida, even when he had .290/.450/.390 numbers.

Beinfest appears to be trying to cover Loria's stupidity by smearing Girardi. Girardi played for 5 teams over 15 seasons and never had a problem with anyone as far as I recall. What are the chances that the "meeting" referred to took place in some hallway or the manager's office and that cellphone call came from Girardi's pregnant wife and was of some importance? I suspect there will be hidden costs for this move for many years as better managers, coaches, and players avoid Loria's regime.

Gonzalez said he asked several umpires how Loria treated them...
'The umpires said, `We never had a problem,' '' Gonzalez said. ``They said he's fine. If he wants to yell, he can yell.''

Hmm, would Gonzalez tell a reporter if the umpires said the opposite about his new boss?

The Marlins' campaign to trash Girardi has only further convinced me what SOBs they are. And the Miami Herald (and its columnists) have been quite the receptacle for the trash.

So far as I've seen, Girardi has been amazingly willing to turn the other cheek thus far. He's shown a lot of class to not respond to this campaign. Good for him.

If the Marlins come up with anything bad about Girardi, let us know. This is like the woman suing Knicks GM Isiah Thomas for harassment and the best the Dolans can come up with is she once kept Willis Reed waiting for 30 minutes.

Girardi is a close friend of Michael Kay. Is that enough?

Even if Loria were right, he'd still be wrong.

This is all pretty lame "dirt", though. Nothing on the level of Rogers Hornsby peeing in the shower.

there is, of course, the possibility that everything they said about Girardi is true

words to live by

there's another way to sub-spin this which is that Girardi is sitting in the catbird seat, and he deliberately set it up that way; you're always gonna look good when your enemy is Loria

Even if it is, there is always another side to the story. Are you telling me Beinfest or Loria never acted like a jerk, in a way Girardi could talk about to a sympathetic reporter/columnist? Girardi never got treated in an unfair way, never was misled about anything in a way he could spin to make himself look sympathetic? Come on. If Girardi wanted to return fire -- even if every bit of what the Marlins' brass are putting out there about him is accurate -- he could do so. It says a lot about him that he's refrained.

If they had the least bit of class, they'd leave Beinfest's statement from the press conference to stand on its own, period. It was candid about the reasons (more than the usual "we just decided to go in a different direction", without amounting to an attack on Girardi. It didn't go into details. But, no. They have to have these leaks, because they are a petty, classless operation that has to trash Girardi on his way out the door.

he doesn't HAVE to, because everybody already thinks Loria is an a-hole (or, more accurately, knows he is one); no one has any opinions about Beinfest and, frankly, nobody cares

that's what I mean by the catbird seat

no matter what Girardi did or didn't do, keeping quiet at this point will make him look good

I kind of hope the Cubs hire Girardi if for no other reason than his seeming to be a guy who doesn't suffer fools gladly.

I LOVE YA, RETRO - BUT YOU HAVE TO SEE THE HILARITY IN THAT STATEMENT...
