MIL J-S blog: Brewers surprised by Favre retirement

When Craig Counsell’s children were upset about something and crying, the Brewers shortstop always asked them the same question: “Who’s tough? Brett Favre.”

That was Counsell’s first thought today upon learning that Favre had decided to retire. “Now, I’ll have to come up with somebody else,” said Counsell, a Whitefish Bay native.
...
Infielder/catcher Vinny Rottino and bullpen catcher Marcus Hanel both grew up in Racine as huge Packers fans, and thus were saddened to hear of Favre’s retirement.
...
“He’s been the quarterback since I was 10 years old. I only know the Packers with Brett Favre being the quarterback” [said Rottino].
...
Then, Hamel asked this question: “Is anybody going to cover the Brewers today?”

The answer is yes. Somehow, Anthony Witrado and myself will try to gather ourselves and file Brewers copy today.

Rottino’s in his late 20s… how dare he block the Majik Man out of his memory!
(erasing Brent Fullwood out of Packer history, would be OK.  Mandarich, too)

Favre is probably already plotting his epic final return. Perhaps by parachuting in during the Home opener and physically taking the ball out of Aaron Rodgers hands.

I felt much the same way the day Lynn Dickey hung em up.

Majik? He was over the line of scrimmage.

Man, Geoff Jenkins finally leaves the city for a place where he won't be constantly confused with Brett Favre, and now Favre leaves too. I bet he becomes a coach with the Eagles.

If I might make a suggestion: Jason Kendall's not a Favre-level talent anymore, but he's pretty damn tough.

For the next 48 hours, a comet could crash into the earth and tear it in half, and it wouldn't get a mention on any Wisconsin news outlet, I think.

I give it one year off. The boredom will send him back.

Majik? He was over the line of scrimmage.

The Bears could win seven Super Bowls in a row, and their fans would still never forget that game. Or forgive.

Egads, Favre is such an attention whore. His team has a good season which finally brings about an offseason without the questions of whether he should hang them up, but he just can't take not having ESPN cameras in Mississippi watching him ride around on his lawn tractor, so he just does whatever it takes to get back in the news.

Why should anyone think this announcement is binding?

I won't be surprised if Favre pulls a Seau and plays with someone else this year. He says he felt unwanted by the Packers. What I don't get is why Thompson and McCarthy had to "review film" to confirm that Favre could still play.

I'm not a lawyer, but wouldn't his contract with the Packers prevent him from coming back with another team, unless they released him?

I'm not sure how retirement works in the NFL, but in any case I don't think he's under contract with the Packers. I think Seau announced his retirement from the Chargers and then played for the Pats the same year.

Most overrated sports personality of our time. The Derek Jeter of football, only worse.

Favre's consecutive starts streak glory is more Ripken than Jeter. Brett did it the old fashioned way too, by popping pain killers.

At least 10 Deanna Favre pieces, maybe 200 Brett Favre pieces.

And for every Favre piece there will be at least 100 blog comments about the coverage.

Tony Gwynn, Jr. actually hit a HR today (how does THAT happen?).

Lot of big and unusual things happening in Wisconsin sports today, I guess :P

Brett Favre. Boy, did I hate him in the late 90's (when the Packers were knocking the 49ers out of the playoffs every year), but I grew to appreciate him later. He has to be considered as a top 15 ever quarterback.

But I'll really remember him as one of my two worst observation/predictions ever. I said when he first started getting hype: " He's so damn overrated. The next Joe Kapp!"

The other was, telling my brother circa 1985 "If the Orioles don't move Ripken off shortstop they're gonna shorten his career!".

Surely that was Chad Fox pitching the 7th inning for the Cubs, not Jake, right?

Seau was not under contract with the Chargers, he basically just pulled the retiring as a Charger(after spending a couple seasons with the Dolphins).

It wouldn't've been so bad except the league then went on to change the rule as if to say, "Yeah, the refs are incompetent, but this makes it all better now, right?"
