MIL Journal-Sentinel blog: Yost: Weeks will stay in leadoff spot

The Brewers’ game against Boston tonight was rained out but when the teams gather tomorrow for a make-up doubleheader, you can bet that Rickie Weeks will continue to bat leadoff.
...
Weeks is batting .187 with a .315 on-base percentage yet somehow has managed to score 31 runs. Yost continues to insist that Weeks has hit into so many hard outs that his numbers are deceiving.

“He’s OK with me,” Yost said before the Brewers’ interleague game with Boston was postponed by rain. “I’m happy with it. He’s hitting the ball hard; he’s walking.

“His walk-to-strikeout ratio (23 to 30) is so much better than it’s ever been. He’s hitting in very bad luck. The low percentage of balls put in play being hits says that he’s hitting in bad luck.”

WTF? Did Yost just stumble onto BABIP?

No... he does do this from time to time - where he'll make some statements to reporters that wouldn't be out of place in some of the discussions here.
(Weeks' BA/BIP is .200 at the moment, per THT, and appears to be the lowest in the NL amongst qualifiers; Bill Hall, at .206, is second-lowest)

It does amuse me, though, when he breaks one of those out.

Yeah, but Weeks' LD% is only 12%, down from 20% in 2005-06 and 17% last year. Hall's is 13%, down from a four-year average of 21.5%. They aren't getting as unlucky as Yost thinks (or is saying) they are.
