MIL Journal Sentinel: Brewers get national call

When the Milwaukee Brewers play their season opener against the Chicago Cubs at 1:20 p.m. Monday at Wrigley Field, the game will be televised nationally on ESPN2.

Handling the play-by-play on the telecast will be veteran broadcaster Brent Musburger, who is calling his first baseball for ESPN. Analyst Orel Hershiser will be Musburger’s partner.

Musburger has called baseball games for CBS Radio, CBS-TV and for ABC-TV during his network broadcasting career, which began in 1973.

For local viewers, neither the ESPN2 nor WGN telecast of the Brewers-Cubs game will be available in the Milwaukee market. Viewers in Milwaukee will see the game on FSN Wisconsin.

With rain slated for the first couple days of next week, it remains to be seen if they actually play.

So ESPN, who pretty much hates baseball unless its a Boston game, gets to call to the first four or five games of the season? Talk about selling out!

I bet the world wide leader goes right to "NFL Live" after the game ends. They probably consider the MLB game as a lead in .. like the quick comedy skit, before the real show "NFL Live" comes on.

Chicago Tribune: Musburger to call his 1st baseball game since 1995
Brent Musburger was 8 years old when he sampled his first taste of the big leagues.

The kid who grew up in Montana selling programs and popcorn for the Pioneer League's Billings Mustangs hit the big city with his father, Cec. They crossed the Wrigley Field turnstile in 1947 for a game between the Cubs and the Brooklyn Dodgers.

"My father took a 16 millimeter picture of Jackie [Robinson], who came over and posed," Musburger recalled. "He could not have been nicer."
...
Growing up in the '50s without a TV, he would put a radio to his ear and listen to baseball broadcasts. His father, who owned an appliance store, founded Montana's Little League program.

When Northwestern suspended him a year for owning and operating a car without a license, Musburger planned to return home.

But Cec advised him to go to umpiring school in Daytona Beach, Fla. That summer Brent tossed two dozen players while calling balls and strikes in the Midwest League.

After leaving CBS in 1990, Musburger nearly took a job as Harry Caray's partner at WGN.

"I've always wondered what that would have been like," he said. "I know I wouldn't have gotten a lot of sleep."

He should've been writing stats down in a book. Right now, he could've been the Bill James for the Cubs. Not that they actually need a stat head in that organization, not with Hendry's humongous brain running the ship

Musberger? Are you serious? I don't even want the season to start anymore.

This is funny because when Musburger is here doing college games, he is regarded as a huge boozer, and is a bartender favorite. My friend Bartender Kurt loves it been Musburger is in town.

He looks it -- I thought Musburger was 10 years older than he is.

I stayed in the same hotel as the ABC golf crew one weekend sometime in the mid-90s. It was the first time I was surrounded by really drunk, significantly older people to whom I was not related. Sharing an elevator with a pickled Musberger and Steve Melnyk is the only time I've ever felt claustrophobic.

I like Brent Musburger for some reason. He always calls guys by their first names, which is rare among announcers.

Son of a ##### .... for some reason I completely forgot that WGN was blacked out here when the Brewers play the Cubs. Damn it.

I've always liked Musburger, but only for basketball games. His broadcast of the '75-'76 Celtics - Suns NBA Finals Game 6 is absolutely classic. I wasn't that big of a fan of how he covered the '95 Yankees - Mariners ALDS, however.

Very good... that's how blackouts work.
