MIL Journal-Sentinel: Yost continues to sit tight on team’s bench

Milwaukee Brewers manager Ned Yost confirmed Monday that outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr., utility man Vinny Rottino and catcher Mike Rivera were the candidates he is considering for what could be only one remaining spot on his bench… How the final bench spot, or spots, play out depends on whether the Brewers keep 11 or 12 pitchers.

If they keep 12 pitchers, there’s only one bench spot open. If they keep 11, two jobs are available.

“With 11 pitchers, we can keep two of the three,” Yost said. “What we’re trying to decide is: What is our best combination? What are we going to use the most? What is best for us over the long run?”
...
Yost noted that Gwynn could be helpful off the bench in many ways.

“He’s a very good defender in the outfield,” Yost said. “He can bunt if you need a bunt. He’s a good guy to lead off an inning if a pitcher’s coming up (to bat) in the eighth or ninth inning. He’s a guy who can pinch-run late in the game if you need it.”

I’m shocked that Yost is even considering carrying ‘only’ 11 pitchers.  Then again, the quality of the rotation is better than prior years.

So, if eleven pitchers, maybe...

Estrada
Counsell
Hardy
Weeks
Fielder
Jenkins
Hall
Hart

Miller
Graffanino
Mench
Gross
Rottino (?)
Gwynn (?)

(I can't see carrying three catchers, even if Miller is slated to be a backup 1B as well)

So, if twelve pitchers... hmm, Gross can play CF, so I'd be tempted to go with the infielder Rottino, who can also catch in an emergency.

Then, to carry over from the Clark/Dessens thread, the pitching:
ELEVEN:
Sheets
Capuano
Suppan
Bush
Vargas
Cordero
Turnbow
Wise
Shouse
Dessens
Villanueva

If twelve pitchers, add one of Capellan or Aquino.

MIL Journal-Sentinel blog: Brewers send Rivera to Class AAA Nashville
The Brewers kept the catching depth they wanted in the organization Tuesday when Mike Rivera cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Class AAA Nashville.

Rivera, 30, had the right to become a free agent but opted to go to Nashville when no other team offered him a big-league job... The Brewers weren't sure Rivera would clear waivers. He was having a big camp, batting .425 in 18 games, and catching is thin throughout the majors.
...
With Rivera off the roster, outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr. and utility player Vinny Rottino are the candidates for what appears to be one remaining spot on the bench.
